I apparently am mistaken on the screen part. If you use a Sony-branded PSone screen, you might be OK. Third-party ones are right out though. I was unaware of a VGA mod. (runs out and buys Sony screen)

(BTW, I have been aware of the nano-ITX boards for months now. It's no different from any other type of motherboard though as far as using the PSone LCD. You either need to be able to do a VGA mod or be in for a world of hurt using TV out. Say hi to Handicapped Mode)

However, some caveats:
I admit you probably don't NEED a keyboard. There are soft keyboards out there.
There are also other keyboards you could use. I actually have one in mind that if you insist on doing it, you might want to look into:
This might actually be feasible. But... yeah, considering how thin and small laptops have gotten lately... you're still never gonna get something like that down to the size of even those. (BTW: I've seen these controllers here for as low as 10 bucks. They're probably all sold out now, but just letting you know that 40 is a bit outrageous.)

Battery life would suck balls. Honestly. Even a nano-ITX board is gonna take something like 10W without anything even hooked up to it. Including your PSone screen! Input devices, etc. will take even more. I'd say you'd be lucky to get it even up and running and not drawing less than 20W. And how many watts does the typical portable draw? Well, let's just say it's probably an order of magnitude less.

gannon: Even the nano's onboard chips probably draw more than anything portable out there at the moment. The C3 Eden processor itself draws 4W or so (about double as much as a PlayStation 2, IIRC). Not to mention that probably all of the chipset logic and onboard video even takes about 5W typically. I'd say at best you're looking at a 10W draw. I definitely think Epicenter was way off base with his wattage calculations (I think the Dreamcast is only probably 2 or 3 watts max without the drive... it's really pretty slow and dedicated). I am a big fan of the CF drive idea though :) Though I stick by what I said- battery life would either be abysmal or you would need a HUGE battery setup... not to mention the power supply card... which would also take up yet more space.
Then again... I wonder how many watts a PS2/Dreamcast takes with the drive... you might be on to something there. If you can get away with only the CF drive.

cennar: You're not going to beat the big guys at their own game here. My laptop fits into my hand :) I'm holding it up with one hand as i type this sentence. I should say that I think it is possible, but if you think you're gonna beat the laptops in size and usability... you're out of your mind.
And just because I'm new to these forums does not mean anything about my technical capabilities. I've got a bachelor's in CS/Engineering. And I've been using computers since before you were born. (Admittedly I was basically using them to play Donald Duck's Playground, but still.)
I've built more computers than I have digits--not including ones I've made specifically for others. So don't treat me like I am ignorant.

In short, good luck :) Despite all of my pessimistic comments, I hope you do succeed. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the results.
Hope I didn't come off as too much of a (insert some expletive here that isn't blocked) before... but this really does sound pretty... less than doable with stock parts. Design your own custom motherboard and you might be getting somewhere

Yeah... but who would use V4 now that V12 is out?
And even so, that 30W is actual, and would probably be less than what even the Eden Nanos might need once they're going through a ton of components... Still, with that information, wattage doesn't seem TOO unreasonable... things are looking up, I'd say :)
That Sammy KeyboardPad Mini with a 5" motherboard and a 5" screen... you could even make it foldable like a monster GBA SP :P What'd be really amazing is if you could wire mouse signals to the right joystick of the PS2 controller and still keep the rest of the controller usable for gaming :)
The more I think about it, the more I think this could turn into one sexy beast. Though it'd still be slow as dirt.

SgtBowhack wrote:It can be powered by batteries. Someone just said something silly. With the proper voltage regs, anything can be run off of batteries. If you have a 24v LiIon battery, you can use a pair of 12v regs like this:
input output ground
24v 24v 12v

input output ground
12v 12v 0v

So basically what you're doing here is hooking up the 24v positive voltage to the input of the first reg, and putting the ground of the first reg into the input of the second reg. The difference between output and ground is 12v, so the first reg will think 12v is ground. This is fine. You want this. Because now you take that 12v and call it ground. From there you can get -5v by adding a 7v regulator to the lower reg (in other words, +7v becomes your -5), you have -12 already, it's the ground from the battery. And then 17v (using a 5v regulator) becomes your 5v. The problem is finding regulators that can handle the amperage you'll need. But that's the theory behind getting all the voltages... you'll also need 3.3v too probably. Anyway, using a lot of regulators you should be able to get all of your voltages :P

Most likely what you'll need is some sort of inverter attached to a mini-ITX power supply though :( In short, it's not impossible, but it'll be so huge that buying a laptop would be the better option.

Realistically, it is beyond consumer capabilities to produce a laptop-type thing. Something like one of these or these (if they ever come out) might be your best bet- they already are set up for low power and size. I know it's not quite as cool as building your own, but until VIA does something smart and adds a +12v in version of their nano-ITX boards (and why not?) the ability to make your own portable with them is severely limited.
me??? as in the "someone"

you can get mini-itx adapters that allow you to run the machine off of 12V DC without modding it or otherwise voiding your warrenty.
That's the problem with your name. I now request that the word "somebody" be used for the pronoun, "someone" be used for the word. Get it? Got it? Good.
that's actually the reason i use this sn is that it leads to confusion

well thats just the price you pay for using a mechanical storage medium. mechanical failure is always a possibility. but to be honest microdrive technology has improved a lot, and they are pretty sturdy compared to old drive(the original 380 meg ibm drives were extremely prone to failure), though id personally rather have a solid state card. but flash densities are really limited right now, iirc the largest flash cards are 1gig.

Oh, I know, I probably just poorly worded that. I think we'd be silly not to like solid state memory, yeah?

I must say, the concept of actually BUILDING something like this is a little insane, but they HAVE been done. www.oqo.com there's also one that folds shut instead of slides, but I have no idea where one would get that.

speaking of these, anybody know where I can get a pocket PC in a similar style to the sony clie UX50?
