The idea of the compo was to encourage NEW portables to be finished in the time frame. Planning, gathering parts and materials, AND actual work was supposed to happen during the time frame. My vote is no, it shouldn't count.




And I got a new screen today, so I'm back in the running!

Mine is a NEW portable seeing as it has nothing to do with the one I designed in april, obviously the layout is going to be similar but, it is not the same one.
What does it matter, mine will have taken less that 6 weeks to build, I just missed the date by a whopping 10 days, where I didn't really do anything. So, what you are saying is that any person who already had parts before the compo started should be disqualified?

My entry is entirely valid. A maximum of 6 weeks as I recall from start of compo; it was made on a tight time frame for a purpose...

Good for you, yours is not under review. Really, I had not done much before the compo began, I bodoed the screen plastic and controls in. That is it. Mine will be less than 6 weeks anyway.




Seriously guys, the competition was designed to inspire new portables, I was inspired by this, it is actually why I got my ass in gear and started working on it. Like seriously, what is 10 days in the span of a portables getting built time, often they take a year, I am under the same time restraints as you guys, I just started a little early, but I spent the same amount of time building it!

similarities? everything else.

seriously, it is the same project. designs often change mid project. ask almost any person who's built a portable here. heck, that's why i've been on a stand still with the handyduo for so long. changing to different batteries? people do that all the time mid project. they decide they want better battery life. or internal batteries. changing of heat sinks? that can take place because you discovered that the old ones were too tall or something.

i still say no. sorry, but that's where i stand.

No, I'm not saying that. I owned my parts before the compo, but all the planning, designing, and most importantly, the work have all happened within the competition deadlines. Now that you've admitted you've done bondo work before, I'm even less inclined to accept it.

Of course, you've yet to prove you can finish it early, so until you do, that's a moot point as far as I'm concerned. Until it's done, you haven't proved you're even capable of working under the same time limit.

I suppose, if you really want to enter it, you could. It is a vote open to the entire forum, and I'm not the only person who looked at that shade of orange and felt like puking. Besides, one of the things voting on is originality, and another N64 in a pre-formed case? Booooo-ring.

Apparently, you missed as well the entire point of the competition. It's not to win, it's to have a portable you're proud of. I know I'm not going to win, you all hate me and think I'm an ass. Your opinions, think that all you want. Doesn't bother me. However, at the end, if all goes well, I will have a portable I am proud of, and that's what it's really all about. Others agree with me on that, even if they don't like anything else I have to say.

No I don't think that Gordon1 should be able to enter, but it is actually looking like he will get an n64p to fit inside the zn-40 case. good job!

I won't say you've never heard of it, but I can honestly guarantee that there has NEVER been another portable on BH cased this way. I haven't spent much time looking elsewhere on the 'net, but I can promise, this has NOT been done before here.

I am the embodiment of cheap, myself. It doesn't take money to be innovative, though. My case's total cost is roughly $0.25, if I even paid that much for it. Considering I'd already used the materials for their intended purpose, this could be considered free as well.

I will be putting up evidence, too, so unlike you, I'm not talking out my arse. This is extremely different, and I've done it with very little cost at all.

or it's possible to use a stock case for something that hasn't been done before. like my project. i posted a pic earlier that gave away i'm working with a zn case. but i can assure you that it will be unlike anyone else's zn case. that's what makes it innovative. it's not gonna just be screen, buttons, speakers, arranged in the normal manner and looking like everyone else's. i think truck was gettin at the fact that the way gordon is using the stock case is overdone. geeze.

bondo is your friend. be creative. you can do all sorts of things with the stuff.

I can guerentee that mine will not be low cost! I am saving up to have an extra $50 for part breakdowns so when I start It will go as smooth as possible. I'm glad that you will have an oridginal (uhghghgh) case. I guess that I am talking my arse off for the moment, because I don't want my mom throwing all of my stuff in a box and frying my psone screen mobo and n64 mobo. my mom is sorta crazy like that.

Holy crap, it is a zn-40 No matter what the controls are going to be in pretty much the same place, the heatsinks kept falling apart on the old one, so I made new ones for this one. I decided I wanted new batteries as soon as I put the controller plastic in. Yeah, because everybody is in the same situation I am in.

Well, unlike most of you I just plan as I go. That is why so much stuff got ordered in late July. As I'm sure you know, bondoing in plastic takes maybe 2-3hrs. what I did do from July 20th on is all of the hard stuff. Not to mention like 10+hrs of screwing around with spot putty. as for the until it's done statement, I explain my situation later in this post. You know what, I like the colour of my portable, and if you don't, you can piss off. I like my orange, I am PROUD of my portable. Since you seem to know everything, I would really like to see something you have made. Really, because it looks to me that you are all talk and no action. So, until then stop mouthing off until you earn some respect/credit from other people. Also as far as I know, this will be if not the smallest n64p (the dimensions of the n63 lite are unknown) it will be pretty damn close. And it even has an internal battery. Do you wanna guess how much my case cost me? I will tell you anyway..... $0.00.

thanks.... except for the not entering part.

Also, My goal it to only use the zn-40 and zn-45. I is more of a challenge (and more fun) to make a console fit the case you have at hand than to build your own.

Ok, so in review; I am sick of all this BS, so here is where I stand; I only have till Friday morning to finish this thing. So, on Friday morning if I have it finished I will post it as a competition entry. From Friday on, I am in Toronto and will obviously be unable to work on it. You guys can accept it or not, I am really quite sick of all of the politics that have been swarmed around a competition that was designed to be fun (and encourage people to work one these). I also strongly believe that there would not be an issue of there was no prize. I could really care less about the prize, I just like to show my hard work to people I thought I liked. As far as I am concerned most of you are being whiny little brats about this. If you look at it, I am building something in the span of 5 weeks. It is less that the time given, but 10 days off. So, I have 24 things to do on this project and I'm going to bust my ass to get it done. And if that isn't what a competition is about then yes I am very mistaken on my understanding of a competition.

last time i checked, a lot of what is about a competition is following the rules... *goes back to front page to look at rules*

1) The contest will last for 6 weeks (to maintain interest and also inspiration).
2) Any portable - defined as a system with a game console, built in controller, screen, and battery to power it all, enclosed in a case - will be accepted. Any console, screen, controller, battery and case will be accepted.
3) There is no prize for winning the contest, except for bragging rights. *IDEA possibly a custom title awarded to the winner or if somebody wants to donate prizes*
4) The contest winner(s) will be chosen through poll of the members of this forum.
5) The contest will commence on Sunday, July 20th. Ending on Sunday, August 31st.
6) Portables will be encouraged to be STARTED on the day of commencement of the contest, so the time limit will be forced onto everyone. Go ahead and cheat though, whatever.

those rules were set on the 18th. so if you started anything before the 18th, then this contest wasn't even in place yet. therefor disqualifying you. i'm not being a whiny little brat. if you can't even follow a simple set of rules and are complaining by not being allowed to enter, then you, sir, are being the whiny little brat.

i think most of us in all reality couldn't care less about the prize. most of us entered this contest before there was even a prize involved. my position would be the same no matter what.

if this were a contest anywhere else, and you were not following the rules, you would also be disqualified.

that is my view. i'm standing by it. granted, it is not my final decision. but if anyone is logical, they will see that we can't start making exceptions, or else we will have to let everyone enter, even those projects that started months and months ago. triton was told he can't enter his current snesp, and you don't see him getting all cry baby about it.
