The definition of "Geek" depends very much on which group you talk to for instance.....
The video game crowd will usually tell you it means being able to finish some game or other in a certain ridiculously small amount of time, owning DOOM for every one of your numerous systems and having an imported PS2 just so you can play the newest games before anyone else.
The gadget people will tell you it means always having the latest greatest PDA and carrying at least three different devices at once with at least one with wifi or better yet GPRS connectivity, having all the weirdest most obscure possible software for each and having the largest CF or SD card in the state.
The computer guys will tell you it means knowing such and such a number of programming languages, being able to do almost anything with any computer without even thinking about it, being able to read, write talk and count in binary, running every thing from a CLI, and being able to type so fast that you need a Dvorak keyboard.
The math wizards will tell you..... Aww heck I can't even tell you what they define as geek since I never understand anything they say!
These lists could go on and on for various groups, covering such diverse subjects as popular scifi and manga to audio systems and car restoration and beyond.
So I would venture that the true, universal, definition of "Geek" is: Anyone who obsesses over a subject or subjects, usually but not necessarily, out of the main-stream, putting their all into them, regardless of whether the subject would be generally considered deserving of such pains and sometimes pursuing them to the exclusion of other activities especially those deemed socially necessary, to the point where they allow it to become part of there persona, regardless of the opinions of others.
Which does not really carry that much of a negative connotation after all.
