hey, I thought of an idea. OK, so the battery is just a 3.6V 1800mA battery, right? Couldn't you just remove the battery portion and replace it with a 3.6V 1800ish mA A/C adapter? By this, I mean cut the battery shell and run the wire out as the A/C -> DC transformer would probably go at the socket. Then, you could just plug it into the wall and the PSP would treat it like a battery and you would never have to worry about bad cells.

because you can't use the AC adapter to initiate service mode, which is the whole point of what I'm talking about. li-ion cells may be around for a long time in terms of commercial availability, but as it is, pandorizable batteries are already no longer made so once those are dead, that's it.

I think the AC adapter route would be better. First of all, are the cells a commercially available standard size or custom fit for Sony's batteries? I could use any ol AC adapter to pull this off, I would need a very specific li-ion cell to replace the battery cell. Also, if it was AC powered, then you wouldn't have to worry if it was charged, etc. because you just plug it in the wall and go. Pretty odd that a place centered around modding would discourage attempting something like this...

It would not work, that is why. The Sony PCB would reads the battery to make sure it is working right, then sends that data to the PSP, in addition to the data needed for service mode. It will read the AC adapter, and no way will it think it is a working battery.

They are a standard size that is easily obtainable, and you can use other sizes very easily. Hence, no reason to use an AC adapter.

Besides, if your theory was true, we might be able to CFW our PSPs, but then... How would we play them without being plugged in?

You still must not be getting what I'm saying. First of all, why would you have to be plugged in ALL THE TIME? You only need a pandora to install custom firmware or unbrick, not every minute of every day. 20 years from now there would probably be generic PSP batteries, but those aren't capable of going into service mode. Second of all, you would splice the wires and attach the DC side of the AC adapter (after it has gone through the transformer) and solder it where the battery contacts fit up to the PCB of the battery. DC current is DC current. If some off the wall 4000mA or 1000mA battery can jump in and be fine, why the hell couldn't DC current work coming from an AC wall transformer? I am not talking about anything to do with the normal AC adapter socket of the PSP (the charger socket in other words). This would still use the battery casing and fit into the battery slot on the PSP, just with a cord coming out of it to run the wires to the wall plug. Either you just don't get what I'm saying or you don't have a very good grasp of DC vs. AC and which comes into play where.
