If I ever get a PS3, I'm hunting down an old 20gig because it doesn't have that butt-ugly chrome trim. And if I can't find one, I'll get a 60gig. But I will not get an 80gig and I will DEFINITELY never get a 40gig.

They are actually phasing out the 80GB at the moment. So all that will be left for the moment is the 40GB.

It has been rumored that the new 2nd SKU will be either a 120 or 160GB model with the DualShock3 controller included. That will be the one I aim for depending on price of course.

All of this is irrelevant though since Gran Turismo 5 has not yet been released. And no, Prologue (coming out in April) doesn't count.

I wish they'd bring a new one out in UK with BC. We only have the 40gb.

I think they are planning on launching the DualShock3 in the US and Europe sometime around April, so hopefully this new SKU will show up in both regions at the same time.

And yes, the PS3 laptop is huge! I was helping Ben out with it the other day and was pretty shocked by it's final form. definitely dwarfs the 360 laptop. I suppose it makes sense though, since it is larger than the 360 in console form as well. It is a very cool portable though and quite impressive.

Looking forward to test driving it, although of course the age old PS3 question still exists... What should I play?

I wouldn't get any one other than the 60 gig. The 40 gig doesn't even have an openable front plate to access all the different card readers.

Just buy a USB all-in-one card reader for $10.

I heard about the 120 gig one, but HD size doesn't matter to me seeing as how I can go down to Newegg and get a 250 for dirt cheap if I want. This is all hypothetical, of course...

True. My main reason for interest is that it will have DualShock3 and I'm hoping it is backwards compatible. If it doesn't have BC it will definitely be a harder sell.

The 80GB was still BC, so I'm hoping whatever they have as the new "high end" model will be as well.

It is all speculation at this point, but I can hope...

Not quite, The 80 gig had software based BC. whereas the original 20 and 60 gig both had the Emotion Engine in them, which allowed for the MUCH superior hardware based BC. Hell, they could even give the 40 gig BC, they're just too lazy to code all those profiles.

Yeah, but out of what a person can buy off the store shelf at least the 80GB offered some BC. The 40GB offers exactly zip.

The 20GB or 60GB is the ideal, but unless one wants to scavenge eBay or used game stores for a used one they are SOL.

Heck even the PS3's with the emotion engine had issues playing some of the biggest titles from the PS2 when it came out. I believe they wound up resolving the issues via software, but never really heard the end result of all that nonsense. It has been awhile.

The thing about the PS3 that rubbed me the wrong way was that it had all these features that it forced you to buy whether you wanted them or not. At least the 360 had the Core/Arcade option. But now I can't consider buying one because every time I do, I think of all the people being screwed out of their money unnecessarily. And I do want to play Uncharted, I really do! It's just that word "system-seller" that gets to me...

I don't really get the big deal about BC. My 40GB model has 100% BC, it's called a PS2. You may lose upscaling, which IMHO on older games is really overrated and not really a huge loss, and surround sound can be a pain, but it's certainly better than the PS3s hit or miss BC. Yeah it would be nice to have it all in one, it would also be nice to have software emulation not run like crap, but it's not the end of the world.

If it's anything like the 360s BC I'm not missing out on much.

The Core/Arcade consoles are good? Only if you like machines crippled right out the box.......or spending additional insane amounts of money to get it up to Pro/Premium standards. You lose so much without a hard drive and the core couldn't even do game saves.

The launch prices of the PS3 were completely absurd, but the current prices aren't half bad compared with the 360 Pro and Elite. The PS3 is the better buy in terms of hardware value.

It's a much better approach to give me everything for $50/$100 more rather than rape me on accessories later. $99 for a WiFi adapter? $99 for a 20GB drive? $180 for $120GB drive?

Also, the PS3 has an open architecture enough to let you choose what you want to use with it vs. being shafted with proprietary goods.
