what'd you guys expect
?
cell processor and what not
...I forgot all the actual specs, but it is something quite impressive, I believe. Better/as good as really high end computers, and those can cost in the thousands (for a REALLY good one
). the way I see it, for a game system with that good of graphics (if the MGS4 ones turn out as we've seen them, for example
) $800 really isn't a bad price.
but it's still a game console, and people are gonna shy away from it if it has such a high price...the 360 costs half, and the Rev. even less?!?!? screw the PS3, they'll say
. I'm going along with spongey and predicting a price of around $600. They'll lose money, but I remember analysts predicting the PSP to be $300-$400 dollars, when it really only ended up being around $200. They'll try and make their money through games and DVDs. If the graphics really are as good as we've seen, then I don't see why they won't sell (if at a slightly higher, but affordable price).
please note I generally have no idea what I'm talking about, and could in fact be talking complete BS. please feel free to flame me all you want, because I really couldn't care less

Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I'm no fanboy, but Sony and Microsoft are making the same mistake(Nintendo might do this with the Rev,but i dunno). The average gamer buys a Console to play games, not to watch dvds, use the internet, cook hotdogs,do the owners laundry, and whatever else they plan on making these new systems do.Now don't get me wrong,if i had a zillion dollars,i'd go and get all three right away, but Nintendo seems to be the only one still with the program here.

Laugh and the world laughs with you; It's inhabitants are an entirely different story.
Well the Xbox360 needs a DVD drive to play games, so it's only logical that they spend a few days programing it to play DVDs. Same with the PS3, in fact the PS3 is better.
The PS3 will have a Blu-ray player stock to play movies, and because it's included in the price, it's like getting a PS3 and a Blu-ray player all in one. And since Blueray players arn't out yet and will most likly cost upwards of $350-$400 for the first one it's a great way to get high quality HD movies and games for one low price.

i paid $0.32 CDN per disc (DVD-R), and i paid for shipping from asia and the overhead costs of future shop. im pretty sure sony can get them for less than 10 cents US per disc. its amazing how cheap these things are. does anyone remember when it was like $10 per disc?Radon199 wrote:...a DVD is around $1, and prolly only $0.50 if they buy a couple thousand at a time.
if only everyone had a time machine - things would always be dirt cheap.

Ya, in terms of developing fees it's still not gonna be very much per disk. Lets look at it this way.
The average sallary for most people in the industry is $60 000 per year. Theres about 25 people working on 1 game. That equates to around $200 000 for 1 game. Bump that up to $250 000 for other items such as utilitys for the studio as well as new computers and software and advertizeing. A good game such as FFX sells around 6 million units worldwide and so the developer fee per game ends up being around $0.04 cents a DVD.
So all in all it's costs proboly (if they buy the discks for $0.10) around $0.16 cents if you alocate $0.1 cent per game for advertizeing.

$400. I stand by my prediction,
Though again it's pointless for these systems to do everything but wash your car. Most people in America own a computer, which does it all and better. Especially the kind of early adopters who buy this stuff, they especially will have a PC.
A Blu-Ray player is a cool thing though.

Well i didnt read the article because it 1 in the morning and i have church in the morning but if its what i think it is, then its a teardown of every part on the machine. Well my dads work just moved to a fully automated plant where they have probably 20 robots and it was much easier for them to buy a "training" robot for parts. This is because if they where to buy each part to build a new robot it would cost 5 times as much to build. When you mass produce a device, it will always cost less then buying each part for your product. "if any of that makes sense"... "yeah its late".

Guys do we really have to argue about why Sony and Microsoft are getting into the media center area? Sony already did it with the PS2 when it came out you can play DVDs right there. Dreamcast didn't have that feature, and the other two were far away, on and yeah 2000 is the year the DVD movie sales took off.
Ben's right a hell of a lot of people have computer. The thing is that 99% of them use a computer as just a computer. They don't change them to be DVRs or Media Center PCs, they're their for the web and word processing. That's why people will buy the PS3, its a gaming system, and its a computer (for those that want another or don't have one) and it will play Blue-Ray movies.
Sony isn't doing anything really know, they had all these options for the PS2, the only big difference is that with the computer part it was you had to buy the "Linux kit" for $500. Well they sold that out so their integrating that option right into the base systemt his time around.
As for you people about Blue-Ray. Remember this, Blue-Ray is not compatible with HD-DVD, so if you want to watch both you have to buy two of the systems (I believe 360 will support HD-DVD), or wait til a dual format player is realsed.
I'll summerize. Sony's played this before and found it successful, so they're just making it all one package this time rather then a total of $800. Well it's about the same price but you're still getting what it is that made the PS2 so popular.
P.S. The specs for the CPU on the PS3; It will have 8 cell CPUs in parellel. 7 will be working, the 8th is there incase one the 7 is defective. Oh and it will be running at about 3.5GHz (maybe a few MHz faster).

Yes, but you only make the game once and you copy the hell out of it so yes it kinda does work that way.SpongeBuell wrote:Problem is, it doesn't really work like that. The games sure as hell don't develop themselves!kidw/32+systems wrote:the games are $50-$60 and a DVD cost a $1 so they still make money
