I'm only guessing, but I think that switch and yellow wire probably disabled the built-in games. It probably added +5 volts to pin 1 on the Famicom port, just like G-Force's guide. (Connecting cartridge pins 1 and 60 disables the built in games.)
But since you don't want to disable them then you probably don't even need to connect it.
I somehow killed my SJ3 by taking off the Famicom port, so maybe that's what happened to you. I've read that chips that are protected with black globs are very sensative to tempature changes. Since the port is so close the globs, maybe it gets destroyed by the heat?

Well, judging from my frustrations with a super nintendo and now a noac, yes. I swear I'm more careful than this
Edit: In case you were worried, the Super Nintendo does work - was hooking ground to the wrong spot. Of course.
The NOAC works too - just don't connect that first pin.

Okay, so I have one of those red super joys with this pinout, and even though I have the P1 controller wired up, it just constantly registers that the down button is being pressed. So when I turn the super joy on it just begins scrolling through the menu of built in games, and I cant stop it. I'll recheck my connections, but I am pretty sure I have it all hooked up right.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what is the solution. This is the last step in having a fully working portable. If I get the original NES controller to work, then its just fine tuning the rest of it.
UPDATE:
So, I did some messing around and I cant get the controller to work when I wire it up to use as the 1st player controller, but when I wire it up for 2nd player it works fine. I dont understand. I am soldering to the pins on the 1st player controller. Should I be soldering to the connections on the PCB with a cartridge slot, or does that matter?
