DSL should run well. Just remember that you should have 128MB ram to really make it fly, and at the bare minmium 16MB ram.
i used to use knoppix on my 333mhz laptop (it has no harddrive) and it has 64mb ram but it loads stuff pretty slow. then i tried Klax on it and it's very nice and runs perfectly but i havn't found out if it can instal on the harddrive, i assume it can. i'd recomend klax over DSL cause klax has more stuff (it's around 300mb-350mb)

again, i don't know if it can install on the hard drive, you'll have to figure that out

EDIT 3:i know slax can install, try it. it also got the #1 vote on the huge list so you should definitely try it :)

I am going to try slax but i have one more question does it support the Xircom® 10/100 Network+Modem 56 PC Card Adapter (XEM5600).

ok i am running slax on my laptop with the live cd and it runs fine and my modem works (im on my laptop right now so it must) and i need to know how to install it to the harddrive.
