Most Efficient?

Ohrite so with a DC DC convertor I can bypass the 7805 and just feed the board 5v straight?

Sorry for my noobish questions I'm not good with this stuff

as long as the dc-dc converter outputs 5V you can.

if you're gonna use a dc-dc converter, you should probably use one that ouputs 5v and 3.3v so that you could kill two birds with one stone (or in this case, two voltages with one dc-dc converter

)

Alright great so how sensitive is the N64 to voltage and current

Like if i use a DC DC convertor will effect the video or sound?

So whats the minum voltage that i will need to feed to the DC DC convertor.

Is it like 5v + 3.3V=8.3

Or could i use a lower voltage like 7.2V.

That all depends on the dc-dc converter you buy. I've seen some accept 6V, and I've seen some that need 9V.

yeah some can step-up the voltage (you lose amperage hours that way) and some can step-down voltage (you gain amperage hours there

). anyway the only way it'll affect sound/video is if it's not the right voltage. make sure it's 3.3 and not 3v for the 3.3v line(3v will work, but the sound will be a little screwed up and there will be some slight banding on the screen.....) for the 12v line it can be anywhere from 7.2v to 36v, as said before......

*to gamelver* Unless of course you're using the dc-dc converter to directly replace the 7805, then it needs to be 5V exactly.

yeah you're right, if you use the dc-dc converter to replace the 7805 then it has to be 5v (otherwise bad things would happen......). if you keep the 7805 you can probably just attach the battery directly to it (has to be 7.2v or higher.....), but it may be better to replace the 7805 with an ldo regulator.......

Yep. Watt-hours (voltage * amp-hours) are conserved, minus ~5% inefficiency. Make sure the converter you get can handle the currents the N64 draws.

Will this type of setup be okay if i build it?

Also does anyone know what those three backslash type things are?

Is it the negtive rail?

Also whats is that squigly thing?

Is it an inductor?

The 3 lines are chasis ground I think. Yes, the squiggly thing is an inductor.

N64 draws ~400mAh at 5V, and ~1.4Ah at 3.3V. I can't really remember right. They've been posted on the boards a few times if you want to search.
