Christmas is Dying

First off, I'm a Christian, and damn proud of it.

Now, what about those people who think Christmas offends people, and they call it "X-mas" instead?

Is there something so blatantly offensive about the term "Christ" that people don't like it?
Maybe because people who think that, cannot accept the possibility that everything they do leaves them accountable to someone who is infinitely more powerful and intelligent?
Maybe because it somewhat refers, maybe even just hints at a icon of Christianity, and people are offended by it? Possibly because it's right and they're WRONG?!!
What is happening to OUR country in the sense that people try to remove all traces of Christianity from our society? What makes them think that the name "God" is a vile utterance, when that very name was what millions of people turned to on 9-11?
Have you noticed that when America gets hurt, the people PRAY because it takes something like 9-11 just for them to open up their damn eyes, to see they can't live in tough times without help? How come we forget and disown the very things our country was founded upon simply because we think "God's not important, I'm better than Him"?

And on this subject of political correctness, why do we call retarded people "mentally challenged?" Is it because we're afraid they can hurt us for just saying "retarded"?
I have a number of friends who are either fat, short, dumb, or gay. What's the point of calling them something they're NOT, when we should just call them what they ARE!
Since when did evading the obvious truth become such a necessity that we call retarded kids "mentally challenged?"
Since when did we consider watering down our society the right thing to do, when we need to voice ourselves and get the people in power to stop destroying the very stuff our society is made of?
Since when did we consider a bunch of equalized "persons" to be the people who can run the country and keep peace in the world?

I apologize for the rather heated elements of my speech but someone needs to say these things. I normally don't use coarse language at all but I believe that these words are extremely effective when used in the right context.

you really can't blame retail stores/restaurants. They're looking for the widest possible customer base, and that *usually* comes from not upsetting grinches like me. however *THIS YEAR* more than all years before, the backlash is going the other way, and they're upsetting the majority--xmasy people.

I hate to drag talk radio into it, but being a regular listener I've noticed multiple extremely popular hosts taking up the cause on a daily basis. I believe this is what's bringing the attention over to the subject. I've noticed a lot of letter writing, and if you'll notice Lowes (specifically) has exchanged all their 'holiday trees' for "the 'C' word" trying now for the *NEW* 'largest possible base.'

I guess they remembered that us grinches don't buy any more 'holiday trees' than 'xmas trees' anyhow.

And come on, it's xmas, we're not supposed to get upset when we hear the word kwanza, so what's wrong with a baby jesus or two?

town squares are a little different. If they have a nativity, I have to be able to put a biblical abortion scene up too. That's probably legally obscene, but you get the point.

As far as im concerned everyone has the right to do what ever the hell they want religion wise, if they so feel the need to decorate their stores with Christmas trees or dradles then thats their desition.

At my local mall they decided to kind of do it the other way, instead of eliminating all signs of Christmas in order to become politacly correct they decided to build a giant, thing is the only word that I can think of to describe it, that has basicly every holiday tradition from most religions crammed into the same area. You know, stuff like a manora with holly and bows tied around it with dradels and Christmas toys and other stuff.

Caroling tho has seemed to really take a dive here after an article in the paper. Some old 70 year old was out caroling with about 10 other people and they went up to some guys front door. Now this guy was too lazy to shovel his fount path and just cleared and salted his drive way and his side entrance to his house. Needless to say the old guy slipped on some black ice and ended up breaking his hip. He tried to sue the guy that owned the house but didn't get any money because, 1) he was technicly trespassing and 2) your not obligated to clear all the paths at your house, only the one too the mail box.

EDIT: Marshall, I know for my own good I spell it X-mas because I cannot spell for crap (and as you prolly already can tell from my posts) I 9 times out of 10 spell christmas wrong. It's not a religious thing for me, it's just my crappy english.

Now that's just stupid. Senility / old age only has a limited number of excuses that come with it, but sueing for your own stupidity isn't part of the deal.

I'm glad that some shops are trying to get away from the political correctness, possibly because they know their customers still are attracted to bold statements (opposite of PC.)
Whatever the case is, the places aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. A privatized economy like ours has businesses whose only goal is to make money.

I just remembered something I thought of a while ago...

If I was still the Catholic/Christian I am, but 90% of the world was Jewish, I would have absolutely no problem whatsoever with stores and people saying "Happy Hannukah" Or, if I was Jewish, I'd have no problem with "Merry Christmas" because I try to keep as much in touch with reality as possible, and I can see where the majority of people celebraty one holiday over the other. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind if people said "Happy Hannukah" to me, whether it's from a Jewish person, a store, or even a pastor! (granted, the latter would be a bit weird, but why not? It's the same God)

This is getting a bit religious, actually, but it's not anything like "my religion pwns j00rs

Oh, and one other thing:
People try to be politically correct so they don't offend anyone. I, however, am offended that they think I'm that sensitive.

Christmas is definitely the number one time I look forward to because not only is it a wonderful day to give to others, but it's also my homeboy's birthday!!!

This is the Christians time to shine and celebrate our wonderful savior, and I happily drive around with Christmas signs on my car saying MERRY CHRISTMAS because this is my time to be happy. I don't go around saying Muslims cannont celebrate Ramadon (my apologies if spelt wrong) because it doesn't make me feel right. I don't tell Budhists to stop praying to their God because I don't believe in praying to statues, one thing I respect as a good Christian is that you are NOT supposed to put down other people for there beliefs (if i can find that in the bible, i'll post it). And it's sad that in our society we have non-believers ruining our glorius moment.

So, all you fellow Christians, let us stick together and celebrate our wonderful Lord and Savior on his special day. Everyone else, enjoy our celebration and give to others in good faith, but do not continue to ruin our wonderful moment.

I think you misunderstand who is replacing the 'c' word in stores. It's the stores not wanting to offend people--I'm fairly certain it's not because they're getting complaints, they just don't want to risk rubbing somebody the wrong way. Everything in retail works that way. When the wife was just a teen working in a department store she told me about having to file nipples off of dummies, not because they upset anybody, but because they didn't want to *risk* upsetting anybody.
have your celebration, and enjoy, I really don't think this isn't an 'every vs. xians' moment.

but speaking of rubbing people the wrong way, can we fix the subject line? Everytime I read, it a spelling/grammar-related rhyme goes through my head.

I agree with this guy 50%. The descion to say merry christmas should be left to the store owner not the government, It is protected by TWO admendments. Since 90% of america celebrates christmas it dosent bother me. But, he forgets that there are 10% of people in this country who arent christian, and dont want christianity shoved down their throats.

Remember to keep comments in here *fairly* sane and level-headed.

I let this one stay on because it's "tis the season" and all that. But please don't bring up separation of church and state because that has no bearing on a commerical business and/or ad strategy.

This is about retailers and people "self-neutering" themselves to be politically correct because they're afraid of insulting 1 person in a 1000.

Keep this article based on preserving the spirit of Christmas, or whichever holiday your faith celebrates. It is important to keep all cultures and not homogenise ourselves into a bunch of robots.
