I really don't understand all the Next-gen hate on this forum. Is everyone living in the past or something?

The xbox 360 requires a different set of settings (sort of) for each game. I think its to do with a way to stop piravy too. Imagien if you could make it think downloaded games were real eh?

I have nothing against new systems. It's just everything about the 360 makes me mad. Its rush to development, how it's quite likely to be a buggy mess, and how despite all that Microsoft will spend however many BILLIONS it takes to make people want it.

They might be PLANNED shortages, or they could just be SHORTAGES period. This thing is a total rush job, remember they were running the demos at E3 in May on EMULATED hardware. So to go from no hardware to system release in 6 months? NUTS!

The PS3 will cost $400. Not $500 or $800 as some punduits suggests. Seriously, save your money for that or the Revolution.

I'll admit I like Sony a lot. I didn't really care for the PS1 (was an N64 guy) but I do like their cameras, camcorders, stereos and all that. It's pretty much all I buy. So I don't want to see them get "kicked in the junk" by a SOFTWARE company releasing some half-baked electronic afterbirth.

I have to agree with you the xbox 360 was rushed. I wouldn't buy it on release day anyway remember when they released the xbox all the fans problems and then a few years later the power cords on half of them were recalled. I personally am a sony fan and don't plan on getting the 360 first and the ps3 has better hardware and the games will look a lot better than the 360 probably. I like halo but sony has some good games for their systems so I have faith in the ps3s sucess.

please, the alternative is Sony--I guess they've never had a shortage. Oh wait, there's a shortage with *everything* they release. aside from brand loyalty, I still can't figure out how they sell them.

backwards compatability comes from microsoft actually listening to the whining of every gamer and magazine in its fanbase, since they first announced the system. I doubt it was ever really supposed to be a feature. I imagine they intended to get Halo working to test the hardware before proper programs came out, but I suspect it was supposed to end there.

I don't like the 360. the demos were ugly and featured more jaggies than I have EVER seen on a home system(anti-aliasing my rear)--but cut it some slack. This is an 'added value' feature, not a primary one. And I suspect it's a feature that came from M$ actually listening to it's customers. Maybe if you cry enough, and make it enough work for them, M$ won't bother including *any* emulation for you in the future xbox(largest prime number)

Yes, 360 is being rushed. It needs to be if they want even a chance of getting enough market penetration before Sony releases theirs. They've taken the dreamcast strategy--which I think should have worked. Of course the DC had all those DC specific titles which I'm not seeing with the 360...

we also have to accept that the 360 is an 'online' console. with the lower level of xbox live being free, this is a given. (it's a shame, since we can kiss games with plots goodbye.) But since it's wireless, most people should be able to steal service from their neighbors to get updates for their little emulator.

I dont think Microsoft would make the mistake they did with the Xbox and it shows. Look at the Xbox 360, its small, its builtin wireless perphials and the fact they're releasing it first. They lost what? 40 billion on th Xbox, thats not a good business model, even for a company that makes over 100 billion a year.

I recently looked at a list of all the games the 360 is going to support. Its really a small list, about 100 games maybe. I think what Microsoft is doing with the whole backwards compatibilty, is the same as Sony with the PS2. You can have games that are made for the Xbox, and so if they can be played on the 360 this might push people to spend the money on the system.

Having two boxes isnt that too appling. Most people would like to keep the whole wiring mess in the back of your entertainment. Even I am like this and I have a switching box that lets me put 4 devices into the tv. The PS2 offered this and the 360 does too (to a limit).

I was just thinking, and in about 2 years Microsoft will probably attempt to release a third XBOX. What will it be called? Will it be the XBOX ∞(infinity)? Or maybe they'll double the 360 in radians, the XBOX 4pi(couldn't find symbol)? What do you think the third will be?

Maybe itll be Xbox: The Limit Definition of the Derivative.
XBox: Image

Or maybe...XBox: A^2 + B^2 = C^2

XBox: Matter or energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only converted would be cool too.

Except they'll probably go with something more cliche, the one everyone knows, but few fully understand. XBox: E = MC^2

If I could choose, I'd go with XBox: Don't Buy This, Buy a Math Book.

Okay Ben, I'll agree with you one one point- it's obviously rushed, and I think the 'inhale' design is stupid. But I still want one anyway, because it's getting lots of support from developers. That's the only reason I have a PS2- for games that good developers only put on the PS2 (Katamari, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak..).

Not to mention it seems to have a pretty good line-up by Christmas- Dead or Alive 4, Kameo: Elements of Power, Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, Project Gotham Racing 3.. much better than most launches.

[E] One thing I don't understand is the '360' part of it. 360 means turning in a perfect circle, and thus not fixing any mistakes Microsoft plans on doing (Like genre variety). Why not 180, that's what they seem to be doing.

well they needed part of xbox to start with '3'

because if it were called xbox2 grandparents looking for gifts would automatically go with playstation3 bacause it sounds a generation newer and they wouldn't want to take any chances.

The Next Xbox will be the Xbox 540.

Why?

5 is bigger then (PS)4.

Its going to go in the opposite direction, in other words, try and kill off gaming.

..But 180 is larger than 2, and the PS3 isn't even out yet.

you can't expect your average american to read the whole number--that would cost you a few sales. xbox180 starts with 1. I don't get why they didn't make the xbox Pi. Than they could use catchphrases like "calculations approaching infinity" They also could have made it a perfect sphere....then they could sell you all kinds of 'claw bases' to keep it from rolling away. (xbox pi stand sold separately--suffer consumer!)

there would be special edition ones, not just shaped like basketballs (soccerballs for europe, baseballs for japan) but actually textured properly and covered with leather/plastic/stitches to look good. oooh, I bet they could license a Phantasm title pretty cheap--then they could make the drillsaw claw attachment for your xbox!

But most people wouldn't understand slogans like "calculations approaching infinity". Pi would be a good name though, because every fat person would try to eat it!
