Ok here we go...
I was at school doing what I used to do at school before this site.
So I was sitting their on the computer at nintendo.com and my friend walks up he says hey Chris I saw this cool thing in popsci and they had a snes portable and I shrugged and continued to computerify my brain.
The next day i was looking at popsci and lo behold the snesp I saw it I loved it I wrote down the name of the website on my hand and later that day downloaded the free chapter from bens book and printed it.
Then I looked at the bottom of the article they had this other website called benheck.com I went i loved. Then I saw the forums thinking whats that because I didn't know what a forum was...
so I came signed up and wrote this.

In December of '04, I found Ben's site. It was an accident, I was looking for info on the PSP. You can guess what happened, but I was so shocked at what Ben had acomplished. I didn't even think it was real until I saw the videos! So I spent two month's googley-eyeing his work 'till I found the forums.

On January 31, 2005, Lucretius joined the ranks of the BenHeck forums.

Now I was no stranger to forum life, and I imedeately fell right into place. None of that spammer, newb nonsense. Just good clean fun.

Based on the 2 posts you've made, signature, and location, you seem to be a good guy. Generally people that belong in the position of the rectangle are people that annoy you from the first post to final ban. Your first posts are not bad at all, I must say.

I was told later that a few members of the board (a certain G and S), were evening talking about me, saying such things as "I kinda like that Luc guy"...

Finding that I fit in, I began to try to understand how the whole portablizationing thing went down (a word I pioneered to little use).

Juat curious, what console was/is your first Portablizing project based off of? Give me an idea where to start...

Unfortunately, I was still clueless. I then began to understand what my role would become here. I was to be a friendly helpful guy, who would direct you to answers. Little did I know what my fate was on these boards, but I digress.

I was really enjoying myslef here, and feeling pretty good about my choice to come here (I'd been to others and had bad times). One member began to stand out in my vision as a real friend. First time I saw him, I thought his name was SpongeBob. This was no good though. I hate that show, but the guy was a really nice guy! What was I to do?! Wait, his name was SpongeBuell...my bad...

I wanna see it.

This guy was a genuinely good human being. And a great friend. Many of the members (the current seniors) were nostalgic of the old forum and past times. Spongey was one of the few that really took life by the horns and gave it a run for his money.

Unfortunately, I was a shy little one, and didn't have the balls to really "talk" to anyone directly untill later.

A few things seem neccessary to mention. First is my avatar. It is a picture of Hobbes thinking. Hobbes is the second character from the retired, yet still popular, comic series Calvin and Hobbes. The comic inspired me to be a higher thinker as that both names are based off of philosophers of old.

Going with that idea is the period of time I refer to as "The Era of 'Luc is Witty' ".

It's not about me, or hobbes!

My personal favorite Era.

Soon after came a peroid of rather uneventful posting and responding. I tried to make the word "portablizationing" popular, but to no avail. I have never created a portable, so I had no huge accomplishments. But I was slowly becoming important. Why? Well, I'm not entirely sure...but I have theories!

1. I began to be a repository of Video Game History. A very handy skill.
2. I read more than I posted.
3. I understand how this forum did and should've worked and was able to help make changes to make this forum a better place. Wow, go me!

I was becoming popular, and with the introduction of new, bigger, better balls, I went out and made some friends. Spongey and I had kept some small corespondence, so I figured I should begin talking more with him. He was a great guy, very receptive and always trying to help. To give you an idea of how helpful he was, when I needed help on a report and he said he'd help me edit over AIM, and I told him I could never get the AIM register to work for me, he actually made an account for me. I still haven't changed the password for it! Slowly our friendship took ground, and we were keeping close convo every day.

(I should mention the whole forum move thing. It was originally an idea started by Sparkfist, spurred by a recnt scare about Ben's ability to pay web-costs, bandwidth, and all that jazz. Read it here)

Now we're talking early summer of '05. Spongey approached me with an idea. One that would forever change Benheck. That's right, I'm talkin' mini-mods! And in all honesty, I thought it was a crackpoy scheme to get him in a mod position at first. But we disscussed it, worked out terms, and came to the conclusion that the fact that BenHeck was on a mini-modsystem was sheer insanity! So we went to work, preparing speaches, outlines of the idea, and guidelines of what would happen, who would mod what, etc. It was a grueling process. And that was BEFORE we submitted it to the community. And the process of convincing the community would prove to be MUCH harder. But we were firm in a resolve and on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, the idea was passed, and I officially be came a moderator of these forums. I wrote the no famous (well, not THAT famous, but whatever...) moderatore guidlines and became a "Senior Member" without noticing....

Since then, things have slowed down a tad. I pioneered the phrase "Zing!" (should have copywrited it, oh well...) and have lost touch with the giddy, fun-loving side of me that comes to these forums. As a mod, this place has become more of a job, and it doesn't help when you've got lot's of people breaking our rather simple laws. Ah well, idiots are everywhere. I also became rather good friends with gannon, and as a mod, that's helped to no end. He's a good guy, with clear-cut morals, and a habit for listening to you. He's a good guy...

As for my plans for the future? Well, Gannon can't be an admin forever....

You built your SNES into a WHAT?!?!?

Well, I first stumbled on Ben's site likely in mid-late 2003, when the old site and forums were still up. I lurked for a while, learning the basics before I opened my mouth and posted. I was the twelfth person to join the new forums once they were up (I would have joined the day before, when the forums opened, had I not been busy), so I've been around since before the beginning of this second incarnation of the forums.

It wasn't long after that that I began playing around with Ataris and other pre-crash systems, being educated on the old forums. I still do that today.

I was still in high school at the time, and learning about the wonderous world of electronics and computers, so I was interested in making a portable of my own. I had a very nice electronics teacher who would let me work on my own projects when I completed my work early, which I routinely did. It wasn't long before I bought a screen on E-Bay and started picking up data on one of my favorite systems, the SNES.

Naturally my case-modding skills were not perfect, but the result was a system with a screen that was removable from the unit, and compatible with Super Famicom titles, and so I called it the Super Famicom Alpha, a.k.a. Super Famicom A, or SFA.

Due to the fact that my new portable required extensive shock testing to make sure the wiring was SUPER secure, and the fact that the driver I had during my 20 minute ride to school sped through the countryside like a banshee, I elected to test the SFA on the school bus.

This resulted in my peers seeing the SFA, which usually got the reaction "HOLY CRAP, THAT THING RULES! Did YOU build THAT?!?". My friends in the back of the bus, who were the Japanese Otakus as well as the SNES and Genesis gaming freaks, routinely helped me test the unit, sometimes with their own games, with no complaints. Of course, only those who I really trusted could even TOUCH the unit.

This led to refinement after refinement, and the shock testing allowed my unit to be built to sturdy specifications. I've have my SFA for perhaps a year and a half, and haven't had to open it once for repairs since the tweaking process was completed.

Also worthy of note was that at my school, you can choose to enter certain feilds of study, and the next year's students can tour the classroom and get an idea of what they can do with the knowledge they learn. After a demonstration of the SFA, many more students signed up for the class the next year. The cycle continues.

I continued to post and learn about games, game consiles, hardware, and history throughout the era of electronic gaming. I also learned many tips and tricks, too many to list here.

That console taught me a lot more about the concepts of case design, weight placement, wiring, and introduced to me the concept of Modular Design, in which you can swap components like screens and speakers between units easily, and minimize cost. You only play one system at a time, so why buy a screen for each unit, right? Snap the screen in like a cartridge in the system you want to play, and go.

It was after the SFA that the next concept developed, a special power supply capable of delivering two different voltages simultaneously from two equal power sources. This was originally designed for a PS2/screen combo, though I since realized its use in the N64. Though I can not release the design (I want to patent it), I can say that a reliable member of these forums assisted with the schematic, and even some of the components used within the second incarnation of the design. You know who you are, and thank you.

Eventually, I became a senior member and a member of the LPC, and though I did not build as many portables as everyone else (little money and college cut into my time), I contributed as much information as I could, and my video game hystorical knowledge and (though not quite as massive) hardware knowledge has been a great asset.

At a Ham Radio festival, I stumbled across a pair of Automotive LCD screens, for a cheap price. I quickly purchased them and made one into the Modular Screen, which will be used in future portables and can save me money. I built it inside a clear SNES game case, which was the perfect size.

Though still plauged by an above full time college schedule and a job, I have become the mini-mod for the N64 and Dreamcast sections, and was surprised to find that there was little that needed to be done in there. Newbies seem to stick to Forum 42 and the oldest or newest systems, I suppose. The N64 and DC forums seem tidy by nature.

In my time at benheck, I have been able to learn a great deal about video game systems, hardware in general, and how to apply my knowledge in directions that I otherwise would not have concieved of. I've repayed it by contributing as much as I can to the forums, and informing those online AND offline about its' existance. (One girl almost hyperventilated when I showed her a picture of Ben's portable PS2 last semester.) I also always give Ben and these forums credit for the homebrew portable whenever anyone gawks at the aging, yet still head-turning, SFA.
