S-Video on PSOne Screen. You can't do it..

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

For the N64's RGB being too dark, wouldn't making an amplifier with a transistor make the picture brighter?

that's what I've been saying all along.........

And go to www.gamesx.com for the exact RGB and Sync lines.

How can you tell if your N64 supports RGB anyway? Is there a chip there if it does, or a label, or some missing resistors or something?

yes, it's a chroma encoder chip that outputs the rgb. only older n64s have it. go to gamesx for pics/info

Oh, well I have the chip because I soldered the wires to the connections according to Gamesx. Where do you get csync from? It appears to come from the 4th pin in the square of RGB.

Gread job on this mod! Im going to look into it more once i get my lab cleaned up. Im also going to see what i can do about component video on this bad-boy! And for the PAL users, after taking a look at the datasheet, i noticed you can have this screen accept PAL signals by replacing the 3.57Mhz crystal with a 4.43Mhz one. So *O*, sorry to say, u could have bought a cheap NTSC Screen and just mod it for PAL. Its not that expensive either! No more that $5 USD for a new crystal. I get them for about $2.50 from digikey.

I think *o* bought an ntsc screen to start with didn't he?

My PAL one cost me £23, which is $40 (ouch!)

good work on the S-video mod Sonic. How would i connect it to the N64?

Wire up the 2 wires as in picture 1, and attach luma to luma on the N64 and chroma to chroma on the N64
Then take another wire from luma on the N64 and attach it to composite in?
Then ground the N64's signal in the same way that i would if it was a composite signal.
Also, why do you have 2 wires in picture 2?

Thanks.

Segasonicfan- can you take some shots of the mod, or can u tell me EXactly how to do S-Video. The pics are self-explanitory, but where do u connect chroma??? INFO NEEDED. Perhaps a diagram would be better.

it says right in the picture where you connect chroma. Lift up the cap and solder the wire to it. And the second pic has two wires because one is connecting luma from the back of the board to the compsite in on the front. The other is where the luma signal is coming from.

So...

You connect the Luma pin from the back of the LCD to the composite video in spot, and the Luma from the console to the same spot, then connect the Chroma's together. Anything I'm missing besides connecting the grounds together?

Yeah, but you'd have to make a custom connector of some fashion. A plug on the console with the S-video one the end, if you still want it as a home console, and not a portable, of course. :) I don't know why you wouldn't want to make a GC portable like I almost did. Gonna do this when I get my new GC, though...

Now for a portable, yes. It is easy. But, the pinouts are (of course) different for each region. Damn you Nintendo!!! Oh well, on the NTSC version, pin 3 is luma, and pin 9 is chroma.

Picture on how to find the pins:
