I'm gonna test that now :P

I can make a simple tut this weekend.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I really doubt that it actually checks the optical hardware and motors, but even if it did, it would be very simple to spoof them/rewire to a better spot. You can slim down the DD a lot if it does not need to actually work. On a related note, the Wii also has issues running it without a disc drive. You could use the just the DD PCB, but it is pretty large on the wii. Look up the "FlatMii", it is a nice little piece of kit all on its own, but the best part is that it is a very small board that tricks the wii into thinking it has a DD attached. That way, you can run it fine and use the USB ISO loader.

And do you have a link to a recent compatibility list for the Gecko, running games off SD?

That is a good tut.

And for running homebrew, I'm gonna order a Viper Extreme as soon as I completed my N64p.

Wait a sec.....SD games through the Gamecube!?!??!?!? Or do you guys mean through the Wii?

SD games via the Gamecube would be amazing if the compatibility is high. I thought people had tried that and concluded it was impossible.

EDIT - Impossible as in with out the DD installed

Not impossible w/ o/ discdrive. Buy you'll need to chip it for direct homebrew loading. And yes, SD games on GC :P

I can remember, while I was doing my second portable, I tested to remove the whole DD, and start the GC with the default BIOS. it obiusly gave an error, but when I connected the qoob pro chip, wich boot up automatically its own bios, it got stuck also, but if you hold the Y buttom of the controller when it is booting, the qoob ignore the optical drive and browse the flashed apps on the chip, I also tested to start the SDGECKO loader apps, being able to run games or homebrew from it with no problems.

so basically this answer to your question.

posible? yes

but obiusly you will need the hardware I mentioned before (qoob pro chip, maybe others also skip the error)

anyway, I noticed some bugs on some games wich boot from SD, the compatibility isnt as good as desired, and is allways nice to have the disc drive or a replacement like the SD interface I saw some time ago on another site.

you also can ask electric rain about his disk drive replacement.

;)

Hmm, maybe I'll make a connection and mount so the optical drive is optional then..
