That tends to happen when you've been sold an unofficial copy of the real player. No, the battery didn't die. And I believe it is the real thing, because I had previously upgraded it a couple times without any problems. I got it on eBay a long time ago, so there's not much hope. 
It would be nice if I could somehow take the software from it and put it on one of those GBA flash carts along with the videos. Then it would be even more compact.
