Wisdom tooth pain! >_<

I had my four wisdom teeth taken out - I have them in a little paper envelope. You need to ask for them first, though. They are nasty looking... huge and knarled.

Vicodin messed me up good. I considered throwing my computer out the window one night. In fact, I was to the point of deciding whether or not I should open the window first... I went to bed instead. The next day was the crappiest day at work, yet I had the best day ever, I was so loopy! I went to Tylenol at that point.

Did everyone just get put under, or did anyone else go the macho way of local anesthetic? (I did! You get to enjoy all the weird, gross, and unsettling noises that go with extraction.)

Mine were pulled out in March '08, just as a preventative measure. It was actually not bad... at all. The oral surgeon was absolutely AMAZING, one of the nicest guys I've met, and I hardly had any contact with him whatsoever. Basically, this is what happened:

"We're going to put this wedge in your mouth to keep it open during the surgery, just bite down on that. Now, when you wake up, you'll be asked to bite down on some gauze to clot any bleeding, that's perfectly normal. Ok, now bite down on this gauze." "wait, what?" "all done."

I was literally eating salmon for dinner that day (surgery was early in the morning). While I had to chew with my front teeth (and kinda squish the food with my tongue) it was no problem. Aside from the foods I was told not to eat (rice, chips, etc) for a few days later, I could eat what I wanted after a day or two. I was even out to get my haircut a few hours later... could have driven, but was told not to after anesthesia. Really, the worst part was those annoying saline rinses, constant antibiotics, etc. I think I might have taken a couple tylenol to prevent pain, but no vicodin or anything (though it was prescribed).

If there's anyone in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area that needs this done sometime, talk to me. Trust me, this guy is amazing.

Almost forgot:

I couldn't play my trumpet for 2 weeks. Eating food is weird for about a week, but having gauze in your mouth is over in about a day. Completely back to normal in under a month, as I recall.

Also, if you have them but don't get them removed, make sure you get regular checkups. My dad had one that "wasn't causing any trouble" and wasn't removed, and some years later needed a root canal... ugh!

I was angry going under because they were taking forever to start, and I woke up angry and saying when arrree yooou goinggg to starrrttt thisssss? I thought it was funny.

And by the way a note on vicodin, I had a HORRIBLE allergic reaction to it after the surgery. It sucked more than having holes in my mouth. Be careful what you take!

I get to have this done before too much longer - mine have pushed my teeth on my lower jaw up a bit, so now I have a snaggle tooth.

Update guys. This made me go "Oh crap... Are you darn serious?" in the dentist clinic.

Apparently, the aching wisdom tooth in my lower right is impacted. They say it's most likely that my other three wisdom teeth are ticking time bombs that will impact soon. The X-ray machine there is broken so they can't confirm the other three but they say this is most likely the case.

In anyway, it's "prepare for pain" this summer. :/

Sorry to hear they're impacted That really sucks.

I had mine out about a year ago. Be careful with the drugs, though. I was on Hydroxy-something. I somehow went from trying to log onto WoW, to playing Skies of Arcadia two hours later without any pants on, and I didn't remember anything inbetween. I'm glad I didn't accidentally do anything dangerous, like driving or playing ET on Atari.

depending on how they are impacted, it doesn't hurt much when they're removed.
pretty soon you'll be back huddled in a corner with bags under your eyes stacking sweets ready to devourer them, like L!

I stand by my theory that wisdom teeth are beneficial. Removing them is going to end up like having tonsils removed.

Let me tell you my wisdom tooth story. My mother is of the same opinion, that you should keep your wisdom teeth as long as possible. So when I was maybe 19 and my dentist told me I ough to have one of my teeth removed, my mom insisted that I would keep that tooth. Her point was that if I would ever need a bridge type implant later in my life, it would be easier to attach. That's a valid point generally speaking, but this tooth was lying almost vertically on top of the next tooth. My dentist warned me that it would be hard to keep that area clean and that I should have it removed.
But I went with my mother's advice and never thought about it much until about 6 months ago (I'm 23 now) when I got called for a routine check it turned out that 1) The wisdom tooth had ground away a piece of the next tooth 2) Because of dirt in the gap beneath those two teeth I was starting to develop a cavity from the side of the tooth.
So, I had that wisdom tooth removed, and actually it wasn't as unpleasant as I'd imagined. I had a local anaesthetic, of course, but being completely free of dentist fear as I am, I didn't have a anything against the cracking sound when he split the tooth in half. Maybe it was in part because the tooth was pretty shallow, but I also think it had to do with my lack of fear for the situation. And likewise, I was surprised that the wound didn't hurt more when anaesthetic faded out. I got a prescription for vicodine, but I got along well with a regular (non-prescriotion) aspirin.

Anyway the moral of the story is that just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it's good.
