I don't remember these issues with phpBB version 2 - is version 3 succeptible to such spam attacks, if so, why? Is there a way to stop them, or do we have to get used to this problem (not just here, but all modern forums)?

The best defense we have is security by obscurity. Cracker groups target the captchas that will get them the most results possible, so they go after the default phpBB captcha.

The simple 2+2 question is unique enough (I think we made it up) their bots aren't programmed to get past it and fail.

If you use a pre-packaged captcha, it's a matter of time before it's broken. Some are already broken by the time you install them.

The kittens idea is the best one.
