I got the screen going bright, white and off today on my PSone screen. Nothing wrong with the video line - turned out the NiMH cells were good on voltage but low on amps; perhaps as they were charged a fortnight or so ago. NiMH are not my favourite cells!!
Used better batteries, no issues.
