Filezilla is OK, but I've had issues with it when transfering larger files (1-2+ GBs)

about this
@kid_sinn

you dont even need to open your xbox to softmod it. what your discribing is a tosp flash for a new bios which is unnecessary, but helpful if you want some functionality of a modchip.
yes its been done before not opening the xbox to soft mod ,
basicly the trick is this the moder takes somthing and sticks it through the back of the xbos and bridges the tsop connection siolder points ,
then flashes the tsop

this method is called the unopen method using raincote linux
the xbox-sean has this under TSOP flashing guides as the tortorial link
http://www.maxconsole.com/?mode=gotodow ... loadid=297
its a zip file with raincote in a save and a pdf telling how to this method is useless trust me open the xbox theres no wories of voiding the warranty its a used xbox and he plans to make it a softmod and possibaly a protibal

a soft mod is a software modifyed only xbox using a game exploit to flash the bios , becose it has no chip and it is only a software upgrade on the original bios blank it is there fore called soft moding as aposed to hardware moding ,
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
then theres exploit moding this is totaly useless, heres how it works
you gain access to the xbox through a save exploit , then replace the original dashboard with a homebrew dashboard veary unstble and il tell you why this is a bad idea,
the xbox is much like a pc motherboard it has a cpu a ide cable a powersusply and even a cmos

the cmos is usualy a small battery on a motherboard but in the xbox's case it is a small charge holding battery that is onboard cant be replaced with out desoldering
heres how it works
you boot the box it charges the battery you set the time and date
it holds it for about 8 hours after you unplug the xbox from the wall,

not a problem with the original dashboard it will error and say hay reset the clock u nub
but with out the original dashboard inplace the clock resets and it renders the xbox useless becose it cant find the kernal that says reset the clock
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
about this
can you also just transfer stuff via a CD-R or DVD-R? Just trust me when I say that my setup will make it hella awkward to try to plug the XBOX into FTP
yes you can , a program called dvd2xbox will alow you to transfer files from a cd if you have the right drive or a dvd onto the xbox hard drive however it is a homebrew applactation meaning that the xbox will not run it with out a hacked bios through softmoding or through chip hard moding,

sorry but here

Post by kid_sinn »

sorry to dubble post but i thought i would make this simpler

im going to atempt to give a good tortorial on softmoding a xbox

1)open xbox
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/open1.php <gide to how to do it you want to open it up anyway or else u wouldnt be trying to make a softmod or portibal forget nonopen guides not forbeginners anyhow

2)identify your motherboard
http://www.xbox-scene.com/versions_1.php
look at the motherboard while looking at this guide and it will become aparent which verson you have write the verson and video encoder chip name on stickie notepad and stick the stickie to the top of the case

3) so you dont have to fish il post the info here
write the tsop vender and size on the sticky

TSOP vendor & sizes.
Sizes range from 256KB to 1MB.

Version 1.0/1.1 = 1MB
Version 1.2/1.3/1.4/1.5 = 256KB

acording to your verson number ,

4)learn about flashing the bios
this is a good gide to flashing a bios on a xbox
http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/~xbox/xbox-sc ... LuSHIE.rar
its in a rar file its a notepad its easy to understand , dont stop with this tortorial read more from other places grasp a full understanding of it

5) when you feel confterbal with the concept of flashing and have studdied your board enuff and have read enuff tortorials , gather the needed files from xbins , heres how you use xbins tortorial
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php
ok this isnt the best xbins tortorial but it works and helps you grasp the idea of it , this tortorial is better http://xguides.xbox-scene.com/tikiwiki/ ... +use+xbins
this is probley the hardest thing you will do

6) gather the files , ok chances are you want to use a save exploit from one of the top 3 games ,007 , mech assault, or splenter cell

so grab the save file for that game , make sure the game has the right disk number on the bottom of the disk
and grab the right bios (info from steps 3 and 4 ) rember the size is key !!
and while yor at it in there pick up a coppy of XBTOOL so you can make the logo of the xbox a nice color when it boots
(my personal note ) dont change the color of the bios more than 1 time change it once and save it once never reopen the bios and change the color again and resave it this will most defently calse a over flash and break the xbox

7) build the save file and geting it on the xbox

ok theres many ways to do this i like to burn it on a dvd then put it in my allready moded xbox then take it from there and put it on a mem card

others like to have a friend make there save for them , becose there friend had a moded xbox

and still yet theres others that like to make a usb stick memorycard interface and hack up there own save
heres a guide scince chances are u dont have a moded xbox or have a friend and want to go through the hard task of geting the files out of your computer into the xbox yourself
http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/USB_Stor ... Card_HOWTO

ok thank gowd now the save can be in the xbox how ever you chose to do it , and we can move on to the final steps

8) soldering and flashing the bios with the save
i sayed earler when you feel confterbal with the idea of flashing your tsop you gather files, well i sayed that for a reason , you dont want to go into a gunfight with only one bullet right ?

by gathering all the items and planing how you will do it , ensuring yourself you can move the save and its moments before gotime , you now have to solder those points , before there was no reason to becose you were not ready but now you are susplyed

this tortorial gos over the basics of soldering the points again , and gos into how to use the gamesave exploits,

http://home.comcast.net/~admiral_powers ... tmod1.html
heres a fat old tortorial, on the subject it gos over the other points i tryed to make aswell so its a good full tortorial sighting refferences and the like

----------------------------------------------------------------------
ok then your xbox should have a new bios and is capibal of runing burned games , or games or old emulators from the hard drive ,

your final steps would be to gane ftp access to the hard drive or use slayers install disk , ( i never use slayers i think Evox dashboard sux i use unix dashboard alongside the original xbox dashboard)
but eather way you want to install a dashboard / emulators / applactations like dvd2xbox or maby even totaly coppy the xbox hard drive to your computer and go out and buy a new hard drive 40gig++ and make a new hard drive with room to hold xboxgames,

--------------------------------------------------------------
my final note if you dont own or know a friend with a modchiped xbox , then maby you should start there, buy a cheap mod chip get the bios for the mod chip install it and unlock a solid xbox to make softmods off of ,

but thats jut me talking i have made many softmods off of a single chiped xbox , and sell them to friends with custom dashboards emulators and games installed on them they like them

What you're referring to is the "clock loop" which only happened in the very first soft mods. The newest soft mods work through the XBOX Live tab (I think it may store it as some kind of DLC, not really sure about that) and don't have the clock loop problem. This is the kind I plan to use.

On that note, can anyone confirm that the Krayzie's NDure Installer is the best way to do this? That's what I seem to keep hearing.

dubbledash huh ?

Post by kid_sinn »

if you use a exploit please pick carfuly ,

with a build date of 2003 means its not a 1.0
if i had to guess its a verson 1.4 or dare i say it 1.5 (the hardest to mod 1.5)

that means your looking at a newer msdash and problems with newer msdash's is that they patched some things

replacing xonline.xbe with a different dashboard is a good mod it came out right after microsoft patched the font hacks , but it was soon patched through a update

the exploit of lanching a dashboard with xonline.xbe is called the dubbledash exploit
however they put a checksum in the kernal of the msdash.xbe to check for it later so before you set on dubbledash lets get some info about that xbox if you havent opened it up and dont know the verson number allready then atleast do this

turn it on and go to the system tab i think and the system info i believe theres a number
looks kind of like this 4920
find that number in the dashboard info and tell us your kernal verson
if its grater than the 4920 kernal they patched the dubbledash hacks and the checksum is inplace for the xonline.xbe

if its the 4920 its self it can do the dubbledash , before the 4920 kernal tho noone did dubbledash it was all sloppy fonthacks which calsed a bufferoverflow and alowed it to boot burned games, down side with the old font hack was that it made nasty clock loops

its good to know some background , take it slow on what you decide ok , and i tell you why , with out changing the bios and only using an exploit , each time you power off the box it wil lock the hard drive with the eprom key , then when its powered back on it will have to unlock it again

with an exploited box it can become a timebomb , sooner or later the mod might messup and lock you out , with out a backup of the eprom a new harddrive cant be made and you have a paperweight

i wouldnt want to see you mess up a good box
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
my final thought tho i wouldnt recomand doing a xbox this way if it has to be done then lets do it good, (meaning i dont agree with not updating the bios to somthing with atleast a tray hack)

my solution , to exploting the dash
ok if you plan on lets say

1 ) booting splintercell then using a save to
2 .) lanch Evox dashboard from the save

(( side note )i hate evox but it does have its uses, it is a gatway punches the xbox im 192.168.0.1 your suspost to be 192.186.0.2 )

3.) gain ftp access from the computer to the xbox with your favort ftp client mines filazilla!!
4.) go in the c:/ partation rename the msdash.xbe to somthing else for backup and replace it with a coppy of uix (user interface x) ofcorse the uix will take the place of the msdash.xbe so the main file of the uix must be named msdash.xbe like the original dashboard

dont move any of the other dash files around from the original msdash other than the main one becose unix uses them it also has a skins folder and a 2ed set of kernals in a folder or 2 it uses

some info on uix
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UIX

that might be a idea worth exploring , scince unix is just msdash with a lot of heavy mods like a skining system the ability to boot burned games and a menu to select on hard drive emulators applactations and such it would never have the cloock loop and the kernal number of the dash allready inplace wouldnt matter
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
what ever the case , i want what you do to be relibal weather its a 15 buck box or a 50 buck box

the exploit I'm using FORCES you to update to 5960, which, again, is why I want to use it because it is designed to work with an XBOX will all available updates. For more information,

http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/xbox-so ... 1-1-a.html

worst case scenario is that it somehow bricks, in which case I'll take the drive out and try to do the mod the hard drive way. If that doesn't work, at least I have a spare drive. Speaking of which, can you swap different brands of XBOX DVD ROMs? do you have to swap the firmware chip like a 360 or is it straight plug n play?

as far as i know you need to flash the tosp to switch the dvd drive. the new bios would skip the drive check and allow the new drive to be auto accepted.

and yes krazies ndure installer is the best way to softmod.

oh, cool, so you're saying if I soft-modded I could just swap in a new drive and it would work? BTW, what does TOSP mean? I haven't been on the regular XBOX scene very long, so I am not acquainted with all the crazy acronyms yet.

You can't just "swap the drive", but it isn't hard.

And a TSOP is where the Xbox stores its BIOS. It's a 256Kb-1MB Flash Chip.

what do you mean I can't just "swap the drive," are you talking from a hardware or software standpoint? I've fixed a couple of drives before (eject problems or dirty lenses), but I've never had to fully replace one, mostly because I didn't start doing console repair until after the XBOX had decreased in value too much to be worth fixing.

ok so apparently any xbox dvd drive is interchangeable with other xbox drives without any need for modding or flashing and the samsung ver. b is the best one to use if you get a new one.

ou dont need to tsop to change dvd drive

Post by kid_sinn »

with xbox dvd drives there all interchangibal
how ever there was once a upgrade drive veary hard to find now
its called the Samsung Drive 616T drive its a computer drive
basicly what the moder does is first he flashes that samsung with filmware

filmware is like bios for hardware parts
after the flash it is able to read xbox games becose xbox uses a different polarity when the games are burned

then the moder opens the dvd drive and makes about 5 solder points to make whats called a piggietail to connect to the xbox motherboard
then its able to be used with a grater speed than the 4X xbox drives these are fast 68X's drives i love mine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
hard drive wise tho you cant switch them with out first tsop flashing ,
read the guides i wrote in this topic it gos over what tsop flashing is

basicly the regular xbox bios uses whats called the eprom
the eprom is a small 8 leg chip on the motherboard it has a key code in it
the key matches the lock on the harddrive there fore the hard drive and motherboard are one lock and key set

the eprom needs to be backed up inorder to make a new drive expecualy when you dont flash the tsop becose if you get locked out you trashed the lock and key set

with a new bios on the xbox motherboard you can allways make a new drive and you can unlock the hard drive and never lock it back , there fore the check if the hard drive is locked will become a thing of the past
other fetures a bios change can hold

tray hack (whie game is in drive u can open it with out the console rebooting to dashboard)
able to boot burned media even from the microsoft dashboard,
new splash screen when xbox boots
igr hack (ingame reset by pushing left white right back all at same time)

clook loop fix (its a auto feture that auto sets the clock to a time if the power gos out so the clock never loops

the new bios's have a boot order in them
they first look for EvoX Dash evox.xbe
or unleached dash or what ever dash you like then finaly if they cant find those they look for msdash

as well as many other fetures

flashing the tsop is the best way to go , if you decide to flash the tsop
all you would have to do is solder a copple small points with a solder iron and a small peace of wire (note i like to heat up a peace of wire and drag it across the points to bridige the points it prevents the iron from lifting traces) then run a game save to flash
from there you can play burned media right away so just burn a evox dashboard to a disk and ftp in and make changes,
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if you decide to tsop flash i will be more than willing to walk you through it
on a messenger program if you like , or through these forums,

well, I did it! I'm currently running Unleash X, though that will soon change to XBMC. Now all I need is a good homebrew/emulator site, any help?

I found this one, does anyone know if its trustworthy?

http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.c ... /xemus.htm

I also found this:

http://snesorama.us/board/showthread.php?t=32698

those seem to be the most up to date.

how do I transfer these? drag and drop the folder through FTP?

I would REALLY appreciate if someone could drop me a link to the best/most up to date emulators.

copulate! I cannot get the damn thing to connect through FTP!!!! I got it to work ONCE and I transfered NeoGenesis and SNES9Xbox (with no games :x) and reset my XBOX to try them out and I could never get it to sync again. It just says "No Link" where it should list the Current IP. I tried to connect it straight in the computer (need a crossover to do that) and it at least showed up as some sort of connection even though it obviously couldn't send data. I disabled the firewall as best as I could, what the hell else could I do? it worked once dammit!

you may have to alter the ip address a couple time or just set up multiple sites to try to connect to. when you boot your xbox just check the settings for the current ip address and alter accordingly.

also a great place for emulators and tons of other xbox software is xbins which is a ftp server.
