I'm not sure how symantec is on resources. the computer company I used to work for used symantec, but I never personally used it. another thing to check, make sure you have Service Pack 2. I had installed XP onto my laptop last year but hadn't updated to SP2, and it literally took 10 minutes to boot.
oh, and another thing I should point out, 256 MB RAM is pretty small by todays standards, even for XP.
