I suggested the cd playback adaptor as a geeky alternative to the floppy drive player. If you can adapt it to a floppy drive then good on you but as mentioned above I think this would be hard anyway here it is

That won't be adaptable. CDROM drives have built in audio CD playback capabilities, this just gives an usable interface to it. I used to use a CD-ROM drive that had front controls (skip and play only, but still usable) hooked to nothing but power for a CD player when I was installing stuff via CD (including operating systems) on one of my old boxes.

EDIT: O hey I just had a thought. What if you got an external floppy drive that uses USB and connected that somehow to an mp3 player that can stream stuff over USB.

Wouldn't work for any MP3 player with USB host I've encountered, as a USB floppy drive does not use the mass-storage interface, and the MP3 player would likely not be able to figure out the FAT12 formatting.

You'd have to use something like a Gumstix Verdex or Nokia Internet Tablet, and compile drivers for USB floppy disks. Once again putting this far beyond a cheap hack, unless the OP has this stuff laying around.
