I'd wait until you have the screen, personally. It only takes a few minutes to break into the console. Once you have the screen, you can take it one step at a time, and test it each step. For example, make sure it works with the screen using the normal hookups. Then, solder in the wires to your video out, and the screen. See if it still works before going on. Does that make sense?
Just a thought, but do you have space to put your shoulder buttons underneath your grips?

EDIT: are there any cheap alternatives to eBay for the screens? and are PsOne screens the only option? Because those seem to be going for 50 bucks.
I'd be willing to shell it out but, just want to make sure there isn't anything cheaper thats almost equivalent.

I'm using a Zenith screen for my project. Apparently, it's exactly like the PSones. I like it because it says right on the screen's boards where to solder your wires to for your audio and video. It's also very sturdy, mine's been kicking around on my workbench for about a month, and it works perfectly.
When I say video out, I'm meaning what comes out of your video cable on your N64. It usually goes into RCA style plugs on the TV.
And yes, I guess I did mean behind on the shoulder buttons.

Exact same size as the PSOne screens. In fact, all the info in the Screen Forum about the PSOne screens applies to the Zeniths. Here's a link to the auction. Even though it says X-Box, it will still work. You just end up throwing away the X-Box connector when you open it up.

Like anything on ebay, good deals come and go. What I do is look at completed sales (go to advanced search and theres a checkbox for it) and see what the prices are like, and then I just look for deals at the lower end of the price scale.
There are two guides I put up to assist people trying to make an N64p; the Nintendo 64 Advance, and the more detailed, more recent multi-console system; whilst I am remaking the casing and design, the guts and screen for the working N64p is all documented in a step-by-step guide on this thread.
It is not difficult to make an N64p, even as a first project, you just need to be careful. The Nintendo 64 Advance was only my second project after all, once I had an idea of how to solder properly.
Before you spend any money make sure you have the right tools.Can you solder and desolder. Do you have the right tools. Bacteria's tool list-
craft knives, small and large
soldering iron, 30w plus - don't glue wires together, they will unstick and lose contact!
solder, desoldering braid
pliers (large strong ones and thin fiddly ones)
electrical tape
electrical wire and thin wire
scissors
plenty of glue sticks for your glue gun
switches and tact switches
controller, N64 mobo, step down regulator, batteries (optional)
perspex, mounting board or similar (I also don't have vacuum forming table either, so make your own case - it is simple to make!)
multimeter (contacts, voltage)
sandpaper
paint/ similar
putty or similar
screen and speakers (you have that)
various screwdrivers, including one to open the N64
dremel and bits
design - paper, pencil, eraser, metal ruler.
Make sure you can do it because the n64 isn't the system for someon with no experience.
