actually a lot of the older systems were really expensive.gamer2 wrote:Process rox but its not with out its expense.teraflop122 wrote:Progress is king. That's my take on things.

I think that right there is what I like most about the older systems. Pixelated representations aren't entirely accurate. I can project myself into the game more.HBN wrote:On the other...The Atari Generation of systems made you use your imagination to play. Graphics? WHAT graphics? Your "guy" what a little dot.
I'm interested in the Wii, but I don't like the idea of paying that kind of money. I know it's cheap compared to the others, but with a small income, I tend to look at things like "One Wii? Or five retro consoles?" Given the backwards compatibility, though, I may skip trying to acquire a GameCube and just save up for a used Wii.HBN wrote:The Wii has a good library, though (In my humble opinion). I might be getting one soon-ish.

Perhaps it's an effect of mostly playing games on older, crappy TVs, but I'm just not that wowed by graphics. I was ten or eleven before my family owned a colored TV. As long as I could tell the good guys from the bad on the BW, it was a good game. I have nothing against people who think they're important. We all respond to different stimuli.DK wrote:Retro ftw Very Happy

I have trouble with the PS2.Sparkfist wrote:And I have to agree to an extent that there are becoming too many buttons on a controller.
I agree with you, actually. In recent years, the intrinsic value of $$$ has gone way down. Back when N64 was the "current gen" console, I looked into buying one. I couldn't swing the $130, so I gave up. Within the past year, I bought my PS2. With the more recent consoles also available, the $130 seemed cheap in comparison. Just the same, I remember a time when you could get a 20 oz Coke and a candy bar for under $1.LoyalistRevolt wrote:actually a lot of the older systems were really expensive.
This post brought to you by David Duchovny's glorious nipples.
N64 is my favorite system, has the right combination of graphics and gameplay. I think we got our Xbox around the time the 360 came out, and the Xbox is still the newest console we have. I personally barely play any games anymore, none really hold my interest. Last game I've really played was Warcraft 3 a few days ago, I've never played through the campaign before so I decided I should.

n64 is my favorite system. I own practically everything from pre atari to wii (over 20 different systems, would have more but some deals fell through) and out of all of them my n64 and wii probably get played the most, next most is snes definatly. i love the older games but i am not good at them and i think n64 has the best mix of graphics and gameplay of any of the "retro" systems (eg pre ps2 generation)
as to the new generations ive see a LOT that impresses me! wii has some fantastic games even tho the graphics are somewhere halfway between the previous generation and the current ps3/360 stuff. ps3 has bluray (i can live without lol) and an ever growing library of good games but the heafty pricetag and the whole "its made by sony who hates you" thing are downers, it IS more reliable than 360 tho. and as to the 360 it seems to have a VERY strong library with a number of good games but not as much of a draw as the ps3 is to me. i own a wii and if i actually had more of an expendable income i would have more games for it (currently MP3:corruption, twilight princess and wii sports lol) but right now i am in uber money saving mode so i can afford to open my store

I generally stay with whatever is the current generation at the time.
Originally it was the NES, but then when the Genesis and SNES came along the NES collected dust (that it still collects to this day). Then the 3DO came along and made the Genesis and SNES old news and so on and so forth.
So these days it is pretty much all Xbox 360 for me. I always like to be playing the new "bleeding edge" stuff I guess. It is always interesting to me to see where developers are going to take gaming next. When I bought my 360 I never imagined having the opportunity to play games like Oblivion and BioShock. I'm sure there are still games to come in this generation that will push the boundaries even further and I can't wait to have the opportunity to experience them.
Some of my all-time favorite games are on those older systems (Snatcher, A Link to the Past), but I just never take the time to go back and play them again. I guess I'm content to be nostalgic about the experiences I had playing those games and don't feel the need to re-experience that feeling again (Perhaps this is for fear of being disappointed? But who knows...).
Looking forward to Fallout 3 (Oblivion with guns!) and Gran Turismo 5 (The real one, not the overpriced demo called Prologue.) in particular. Should be a good time!

Modern games seem to "wow" me less and less every year. Anything too original is rare it seems. Granted, there are some amazing incredibly creative games (like Oblivion, Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, Portal, etc.), but there seem to be fewer games that interest me lately. Back in the N64 days, there seemed to be games that I liked all over the place. There were more than I could play (and I had way more free time back then
).
I'm not a graphics nut. But I like to play stuff at the highest potential of the platform. If I buy a brand new Wii game (for example) and the graphics look like they are on an N64, I won't like the game as much, and I brand the developers as lazy. However, if a developer does a great job with the Wii graphics, even though I am aware that it would look better on a different platform (PS3 for example), I am content with the Wii graphics. Similarly, if a PS3 game looks like it could run on the Wii, it stands out as bad. (Don't pass this off as a Wii fanboy post; it's just an example.) Also, not running PC games at max settings bugs me (stupid Bioshock, making me want a new computer).
My only "current" gaming platforms are Wii, PC and DS.
Wii interests me, as it contains all the Nintendo games that are rehashed for the 12th time, yet I somehow still find them fun. Plus, it's main innovation appeals to me more than 360's or PS3's (motion controls vs good online and Blu-ray). Sure Wii's online is rather bad, and the Wii can't do HD, but motion controls to me are more appealing than those things. Also, Wii is cheap.
That certainly helps.
I like PC gaming for the controls mainly. I simply cannot play first-person games (which are the majority of the 360/PS3 games that interest me) without a keyboard and mouse. Also, my computer monitor is better than my TV (in its RF input only glory), so stuff overall is more clear. Also, I like RTS games. RTS games need a mouse, period (except Advance Wars on DS, but I digress). Big downside to PC gaming is that it can be really expensive.
To replace my 5-year-old computer with something that can actually play games well (which I plan on doing this summer sometime), it will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $800. Also, to keep up with games, it will require numerous upgrades down the road. However, this price is more justified to me than a $400 PS3, as a PC is not solely for gaming. Still really expensive though.
DS is just cool. It's the only portable on the market that has any games at all that interest me. To me, DS has the perfect graphics capabilities. It can do 2D beautifully, and can do good (although not incredibly stunning) 3D as well. This allows developers to still make 2D games, and not be labeled as lazy. Thus, the DS has a good balance of 2D games (Advance Wars, Castlevania, Pokémon, etc.) and 3D games (Mario Kart DS, Final Fantasy III, Zelda, etc.). Controls on DS are perfect, IMO. D-pad, 4 action buttons, and 2 shoulder buttons, plus the touchscreen. The touchscreen is an interesting concept, and overall has been utilized fairly well. Some games (like Advance Wars) are just way more straightforward with the touchscreen. In others (like Pokémon) it is just a nice touch. But developers don't feel they have to use the touchscreen, as many great games (like Castlevania) don't use it at all (or very very little). DS games are cheap too: $30-35 each, new ($40 if you're Square
). Battery life is also excellent on the DS, which matters tremendously in a portable.
Older games seem overall to be better and more creative. My first exposure to video games was my cousin's SNES and later, N64. My first system I owned was the N64 (from Funcoland, which is not Gamestop in any way). My favorite system overall is probably the N64 (which is most definitely biased, but that's just how it is
). I emulate a lot of old games, from NES up to N64 (on my PC (with USB-imized Xbox controller), Xbox, and GP2X). Recently I've been discovering a lot of S/NES games through emulation that I've heard people talk about (Contra and Chrono Trigger come to mine), and they are great!
The most "retro" system I play on a regular basis is N64. I have about ~15 games for it, and I play it about as frequently as any other system. I do also have a PS2, but that is only used for Guitar Hero III
. Xbox is for XBMC and emulators. I will obtain a SNES soon, and will then proceed to buy all the awesome SNES games (including Road Runner's Death Valley Rally: best game ever to mess with a Game Genie; my cousin and I had some good times with that back in the day), as I have never owned one before. I have a NES, but only like 2 games for it (I do plan to get more).
This post is getting uber-long, so I'm gonna try to wrap things up here...
Current games are good; retro games were better. Completely my opinion; I can see how someone could think the exact opposite. I believe that the advancements in graphical power have brought down the creativity required to make a video game, and thus the fun.
tl;dr I like both, but retro a bit more.

Since when is Mario Galaxy "original"? It has all of the same old stuff that Mario 64 did and noting seems too original to me.
The whole walking on a sphere thing has been done before if thats what you are referring too.
I'm not calling it a bad game, it is fun, just not original.
Also IMO. PC is the best choice. It can play ALL of the older consoles
You can have 1 decently powered PC, with a large HDD.
OR
15 consoles and a ton of cartridges.
What would you choose?
THESE THINGS ARE MY OPINION SO DON'T FLAME!
Wii: it is kind of cool, has few games I would go as far as to spend 250+cost of game to play though. Also like someone said "if you took away the Wii-Mote the games would lose nothing significant."
PS3: Yea it looks good, but are the games good? The PS3 has SEGA Genesis syndrome. This might get corrected in the near future though.
360: Again, looks good, has good games, but I just don't care for some reason. My brother has one and I have yet to buy a game and play it. Most of the games are FPS's too.
So IMO: I would rather spend 300 a year to keep a decent PC then have a console. PC is a multi-tasker.
Also keyboard+mouse is SUPERIOR to ANY consoles controls. I could beat the best player on a console with his controller at any game. (well maybe not a puzzle game)
I know PS3 can use mouse and stuff.

I think the key reasons that originality is down currently is; programmers or at least the companies, think that people like graphics, and pretty things, rather then a meaningful story line. And the other reason is that so much has been done that it's becoming harder to make something that is "truly" innovative. And ofcourse then there's Nintendo that just doesn't care, that much, as they do the Disney thing and resell the same thing to the new generation who haven't played it yet.
I'm not a complete downer, FFX was a good game... kind of short for a Final Fantasy title though. I like cinematics and all the stuff, but not when you have a cut scene ever level or some non-sense like that.
I'd really like it if they could get more games that area nice marriage of both. Because in the old days they had to have good stories, because they couldn't do hi-res graphics.

there is nothing quite like picking the game from the shelf, feeling the cartridge in your hand, placing it in the console, and playing it the way it was meant to be played!
not to mention that emulation is illegal...

i would choose the game systems, because they retain value, your brand spankin new 4000$ desktop (or whatever) will be worth less than a few hundred within ~5 years whereas classic game systems generally increase in value. my entire game collection (a few hundred games ~20+ different systems and also classic computers) is worth by my best estimate ~5000$ if i were to sell each item individually on ebay, as an entire lot on ebay i could probably get ~2-3000You can have 1 decently powered PC, with a large HDD.

Totally agree. However, emulation is only illegal if you don't already own a copy of the game (Hence the "Please own a copy of this game before downloading it" message). For somebody like me, thats a problem, lovablechevy wrote:that's a no brainer! the 15 consoles and a ton of cartridges.
