As far as everything else goes, when people call the Wii a souped up Gamecube, what they usually mean is that it was a very small step forward. They went from 485 MHz and 43 MB of RAM to 729 MHz and 88 MB of RAM, not quite double. From the Xbox to the 360, however, we got eight times the RAM (64 MB to 512 MB) and over four times the processor power (733 MHz to 3.2 GHz) or twelve times if you include the three cores.
When you compare those numbers, it's kind of sad. The Wii's processor is slower than the original Xbox's. I'm not saying the Wii isn't fun, just that it's a very small upgrade hardware-wise compared to the Xbox (and the PS3, though I don't know those numbers offhand).
For processor power in general, the numbers don't mean much, it's how the chip is designed. For example, in PCs AMD CPUs are usually clocked lower than their Intel counterparts but do just as well or outperform them due to how efficient they are. Architecture also has quite a bit of a difference. My cell phone has a 400MHz ARM processor. That would be incomparable to a MIPS processor or even an x86 processor because they are made differently for different purposes. It's like different species in the animal kingdom. In this way, the Wii cannot be compared to the XBOX, as they are quite different.
Well, the Gamecube, the Wii, and the Xbox 360 all use PowerPC-based processors, so I'd say you can compare them very easily. And like I said, the differences are significant enough that architecture aside, the Xbox made a huge jump between generations and Nintendo did not.
Therefore, the Wii may only have a tidbit more in the numbers than the Gamecube, but efficient design may mean it is far more powerful.
And for the XBOX360, or any multi-core processor, its total power is not the clock speed of the processors added together. It works so that the program goes in different pieces, allowing each processor to work with a piece, making the process happen more quickly (that is, the processors are working independently for a common goal, their numbers aren't stacked together). This is why the PS3 is ideal for Folding@Home; it has a large number of powerful processors that can each work on a project.
I know how multi-core processors work. I wasn't saying it was 12 times faster, just potentially 12 times as powerful when you just look at the numbers. In practice it's a completely different case, I agree, and that case is that the 360 has significantly more processing power than the Xbox.
And RAM isn't terribly important, because in a standardized system they can optimize to cater to just one set of hardware specs, rather than in the PC world where they have to work with systems all across the board, making it far more difficult to program. I'm not saying 88MB is an excellent amount of RAM, but I think Nintendo would have put more in if they really needed to.
Well yeah, the Wii doesn't need to cache nearly as much because its games are generally less graphically intense and they don't have many games with huge levels that need to be cached. So it can afford less RAM. I'd guess the loading times on Zelda and Mario aren't that great though (don't know, haven't played them).
