People with XP systems are lucky, but ill prepared. I suggest working on Dos and 95 on some 486 ISA boards

when i ditched my apple II C + in 1993 i got my first PC

55 mhz 486
windows 3.1 for workgroups
and a laughable 8 MB of RAM which i even more laughably upgraded to 16

i have a 2.0 ghz now but from about 1999-2003 i had a 233 mhz gateway 2000 w/ windows 95. i could have upgraded it to 98 but left 95.....out of principle

back then you had to think about what you wanted to do
old pieces of %$%#$ helped to impart what i think is the most important computer skill there is: thinking like a computer

at this point im really enjoying just the training and studying and have picked up many tips already i know i will or can use on my own
and i have insight on a number of things that werent important but i wondered about

Look its just been said in this thread that people with Certs dont neccessarily have knowlege or experiance outside the classroom, or they have no real world expericance to speak of. Personally I'd take someone who was trained/taught by a person that makes D-bases. I'm infact taking a D-Base class now.

Having general knowlege is more closer to an amusement now, employers want who their hiring to have experiance in what their doing.

And as I said before Microsof Certs are offered everywhere. I dont see it as anything special when you have something they everyone can get. And if all you do is study on your own before taking a test, that sound more like a coraspondents/online/independent couse where your doing most of the learning and work without help from a teacher. I'm taking independent modules and I like it every week I get a chance to ask the teacher how to do this or that and I have help form someone thats done this for a living.
