Running Windows properly instead of half-assing a Windows 98 compatibility layer?

Crossover is better than Wine.

If you really want to run windows apps, why not just run Windows XP in vmware/parallels/qemu/whatever in linux?

A fresh install of Windows may change your opinion.

BTW, what are the specs of this computer that's "too crappy for Windows"?

I don't know how to check the specs in Ubuntu, so I will tell you this:

Compaq Presario 700
Small HD (Don't know the specs)
Low memory ('' '')
Originally had Win 2000, upgraded to XP, ran like crap

Non-preformance (sp?) affecting problems:
Cracked hinge
No battery

So your computer is too crappy to run an OS that came out almost 7 years ago? What the hell, man?! Do you dig through the trash for computer parts or something? I've run XP on a Pentium 166 with 64 megs of RAM just fine. The only Linux distros I've managed to boot to a GUI with that run minimalist window managers like Fluxbox and IceWM.

Windows isn't this completely bug-laden bloated piece of crap that all the Linux advocates seem to think it is, and after 2 quarters of simultaneous classes on Windows XP / Server 2003 and Linux, I can whole-heartedly say that Windows boots faster, runs more smoothly, and is easier to configure and maintain.

From what I've seen, a full desktop GUI Linux is at least as taxing on the system as a fully patched XP install.

How many times have you had to restart Windows because of a program, Bic? Windows may not be buggy, but it's very crashy.

EDIT: WIN XP took me half an hour to boot. Ubuntu takes half a minute.

98? Constantly.

NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP / 2k3? Maybe a handful of times over the last several years.

Holy. Crap. There's absolutely no reason for that. Either you're being facetious or there's something seriously wrong with that computer. It should have a 900mhz mobile Duron, 256 MB of RAM, and a 20 gig HD. My main laptop is a lot lower than that and it only takes about 40 seconds to boot.

Was that XP install fresh, or an upgrade? :?

Having a Windows partition.

I love Linux, but sometimes you just need to keep a Win partition around. I can't stand using Wine, Cedega, or any other emulators.

Everyone who begins using Linux feels the need to cut themselves off from having other operating systems and preach Linux. I just don't get it. I will always prefer Linux, but if I need to run a Windows app I'll run it on Windows.

XP is pretty stable. I've never had any problems with it, nor have I ever had any major security issues.

Even a bogged down copy of XP should only take a minute or two max to boot, usually the start up apps like the AV and Firewall slow it down.

Each OS has it's strengths and weaknesses. In the grand scheme of things, it all comes down to personal preference. Right now my main OS is XP(on my laptop). But as soon as I can get Backtrack to dual boot, I'll use that.

On that note, can anyone tell me why QTparted(backtrack partitioning tool) can't partition my hard drive? Under linux it's sda1.
Why is it that every time I post in a thread, it dies?

Or look about getting Crossover Office. It might have changed names, but it's Wine just with more support then a forum.

I'm currently looking at a music player called Banshee. It supports the add or retrieval of music for iPods, and as I have two I'd like to use an oss application over running iTunes in Wine/Crossover Office.

Update -
I just used Banshee to add two new albums to my Nano, and it doesn't seem to have messed anything up. So if any of you want to use something pretty straight forward, go with this program.

I guess I am the only one around here who uses a Mac 8) . Keep in mind I save my modding for game systems :D.

I am a Computer Sciences student, and I have run Windows for many many years, but I decided that I would get myself a nice little Macintosh machine! I have had it for almost a year now, and I love it.

I installed XP running on Parallels and have booted a total of 2 times in that year. Both times were to use CAD software which isn't available on the Mac.

Anyways, my final words on this are: I have extensively used all three OSs (Mac, Windows, and many distros of Linux/GNU) and I have found that most tasks can be done on any of them. For the most part it doesn't actually matter which OS you use, it comes down to preference! Anyone who is militantly against an OS probably has tried it, and not been very successful.
