Laptops in school!

My view on that is that if you're learning just as much and taking in information, a few during idle times won't hurt. Personally, I don't, as the class is very fast moving and there isn't really time to fool around.

A big problem with that, though, is that it's really, really distracting to the people next to you and behind you.

Nobody will notice too much if you're doodling in a notebook, but a big bright screen with moving graphics makes it harder to focus on the instructor.

That's my opinion too. Plus some people seem like they're putting on a show when they type. I'd understand if it's just a "clicky" keyboard, but I had a lecture class with one guy who sounded like he was trying to destroy his keyboard with every letter pressed.

Well, distraction somewhat goes without saying; I guess that I should extend that my opinion also includes if it isn't distracting people around you. Then again, a time that you can play games is a time that it should be OK if someone's distracted. The whole point is that you're playing games while you don't need to watch the professor. If it's a problem that you're not watching the professor/others aren't watching, then you shouldn't being playing games. Such times can include before the lecture starts, while homework is being collected, or during free time.
