How to Partition a HDD?

If the laptop you're looking at is an ACER, you don't have to go through these steps. They partition the hard drive in two for the customer, kind of in anticipation of them duel booting. The partition will already be NTFS, so all you have to do is be sure you don't pick the first 2 partitions... they have two for Vista, the OS and the swap.

If you were to use fdisk or any of the tools that come with windows, it would most likely wipe your existing data. If you were to use Partition Magic or a different non-destructive partitioning tool it would not destroy it. This is of course assuming that you have sufficient free space on your hard drive, if it were packed, it wouldn't have room to create the new partition.
