Does the 2x have a bigger homebrw community, or something?
To put it shortly, the PSP is made by sony. We all hate sony. They put Lik-Sang out of business. They also provide frequent firmware upgrades that make it harder and harder to run homebrew on.

The GP2X is made by a company that doesn't have bum sex with their co-workers (to put it nicely). They made the Gp2X run linux. Other than that, the growing community provides ALL software. Bum sex free. Once you pay for the Gp2X, there are no more costs to pay, unless you want a bigger SD card (1 gig for $15 shipped from/to Ontario, in Canadian funds. It's probably cheaper for Americans)

However, the PSP can emulate PS1 full-speed. In that respect, the PSP is better.

But if you like 16-bit systems or lower, the GP2X is your system of choice.
Hey, sup?

Now. Im stuck between a PSP and a Gp2x.
The PSP is the more capable emulation and homebrew machine. The Sony PS1 emulation is literally fullspeed- no silly frameskipping or anything- and the N64 emulator is getting along nicely ( Mario 64 8-12 fps, WITH sound, WITHOUT frameskip). Overclocking the PSP is completely safe in that it was originally designed to run at 333Mhz (official titles run it at 222Mhz, with a few exceptions).

PSP use is streamlined compared to the GP2x. The PSP takes three or four seconds to boot instead of a dozen-plus, charging the PSP involves plugging it in, and a full charge will last through the day.

Not only does the PSP have an enormous homebrew community, but it also has top-quality commercial games which, with the right software, you can *ahem* borrow from the internet and load to memory stick.

God of War II and Elderscrolls Oblivion (albiet modified) are coming to the PSP, among others.

The only operational downside of the PSP is the lower refresh rate of the screen. Some games will blur, other games will not. Some treetops in Sonic 1 blur when you run one way or another- something about the particular contrasting colors. Daxter, a commercial release, doesn't blur.

Downgrading the PSP can be rather frightening, but it will work fine if you read up on it for an hour or so and follow directions accurately.

If you want to support a cause, whatever it may be, get the GP2x. If you want a handheld for playing media and games, get the PSP.

EDIT: I don't hate Sony :P Neither do I particularly like them. It really doesn't matter.

I'll preface what I'm going to say here by mentioning that I've never seen a GP2X in person, much less used one so I could be wrong. That being said, I agree with teraflop122. The PSP is the way to go if emulation is what you're looking for.

The 8 bit emulators for the PSP run at full speed....well actually faster probably. Playing Super Mario Brothers took a little getting used to because it never ran as 60 fps on the original hardware. The 16 bit emulators, like SNES and Genesis, run pretty close to full speed and each has their own set of tweakable settings. Some of the 16 bit games run at full speed, others don't but can be made to run pretty close if you spend a little time playing with the settings.

I've never used the N64 emulator, but from what I understand it is coming along nicely. Most games are playable, but they're not full speed yet. The guy who wrote the program is still actively working on it, so I expect it to eventually get as close to full speed as it can.

The PSone emulator is downright awesome. I've got most all of my PSone games converted so that I can play them on the PSP. There are still some compatibility issues with PAL games, but all the games that I've got run fine. I've been playing a lot of Gran Turismo and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 lately.

Now for the downside......In order to do all this cool stuff on your PSP you have to be running custom firmware, which means that you need one that can be downgraded. Any PSP that has firmware version 3.03 or less can be downgraded. Its true that the process is a little scary, but in truth the devs have gotten it to be on par with doing an official Sony update. Most people who brick their PSPs now-a-days did something wrong during the downgrade. I've downgraded several PSPs and I've never had a problem.

The PSP takes three or four seconds to boot instead of a dozen-plus,
the gp2x doesnt take 12+ seconds to boot, the old firmwares (1.1 1.2 etc) used to boot really slow but any after fw2.0 it boots on average around 5-7 seconds or so. the only real advantage the psp has over the gp2x is a slightly higher clock speed (333mhz when clocked up vs almost 300 when overclocked a bit) and a 3d graphics chip. the gp2x has a great homebrew and emulation scene, almost everything pre PS1 runs at or close to fullspeed and gets better all the time. psx emulation is never gonna be as good as on the psp but zodttd and a few others are going to be scratch coding a psx emulator that should be very good.

from what i can tell you are basing your gp2x experiences from the early days of the system (pre FW 2.0) when everything was not all that great, it has changed a lot, there have been hardware revisions and many new firmwares etc and a great deal of improvement on the software front

Well the boot loader would never do anything but crash the psp.

Sorry, some of my information about firmware-related functionality is out of date.

Wait...why was this thread started? Oh yeah, I forgot somewhere on page one. Perhaps vskid is right and this thread has run its course.

Hmm. Im gonna get a PSP.
It comesn with hardcase, USB, 1GB card, Charger for $180 CAD

The firmware is 3.1 (The store owner said 3.1, not 3.01 but I COULD be wrong, yet its doubtful).

Can I still downgrade form 3.1?

Isn't either 3.01 or 3.03 the cut off for downgrading at the moment ?

3.03

Although developers are working on getting a HEN/Eloader working with 3.1 as we speak.

Im probably going to buy this one, as someone will probably find a crack to play emulators on it. AND it comes with a 1 GB card :D

3.03 is the cutoff, but just wait a few months; a new exploit will be discovered. Just don't update the firmware, and check back in awhile and chances are, you'll be able to downgrade.

Heh, woops, bit late. (That's what I get for opening all the threads I want to read in tabs and then going through them later.)

I have an Idea about emulation.

You know how each console has that one game that was like, a hog? Like LoZ:MM on N64? Or Starfox for SNES? Well the theory is:

An emulator must perfectly emulate that powerhouse game to be considered full speed.

EMU = GOOD
ORIGINAL = BETTER!
