I'm not surprised they dropped the Gamboy name. If you cling to a name for too long, it seems like you're out of ideas (&cough*PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP*cough*). Although I myself am not concerned about losing the Gameboy name. So what? It's still Nintendo, I could care less.

However, I am curious what the next Nintendo handheld will be. Will it have two screens and a touchscreen? It seems like they are going to have to stick with their current two sceened, touch screen version otherwise it will seem like they're going backwards on innovation. Plus there would be no DS backward compatability.

backwards compatablilty?

god that's an awful thought... That EVERY nintendo handheld for the next 10 years or so would have to have two screens and touch capability. No my guess is that the next gen of nintendo handheld will resemble neither the DS nor the gameboy line--though it *may* take the gameboy name.

I could be totally wrong, and frequently am, but I don't think nintendo is going to stick with backwards compatability if the expense is going to be the next generation. My guess is that DS will be an evolutionary 'dead end'. and if there's to be any backwards compatability at all, my guess that it will be with other nintendo systems with the familiar 'virtual consoling' it instead of putting one of those mammoth cart slots in another system.

backwards compat

This's how I think backwards compatibility will work. If you want to play the old 4bit/8bit gameboy games (the oldest) You need a gamecube gameboy player, super gameboy or SP. Those are kind of your best choices for that. (Ughh, Gameboy Micro might play them though, double ugh) The DS doesn't play them, only DS and advance games.

The DS lite is probably going to be the last dual screen and then back to some kind of shorter cartridge like you see in the bottom of the DS. They have a few carts that size right now but from what I've seen they're rare. They have a rumble pack that size, the DS browser cart is that size and I think that's about it.

I like the name change also. I think Nintendo likes them also because they get to tack the name of the system on every other game. Just look at all of the games with Super by them (from SNES) all of the games with 64 by them (from n64) all the games with advance, (from gba) all the games with words having D and S in them (from DS) So that's just kind of their style to keep throwing new names into each system to name the games all wackadoo.

Sorry for long posts. :(

Maybe the next Gameboy will have a really wide touch screen, and if you want to play DS games, you hold it sideways or something. But then how would the actual buttons work... Hm...

I dunno, maybe the DS will just have compatibility on consoles. I mean, look at Wii; Technically, DS games could work, using the pointer as the "touch" screen, and mapping out all the buttons properly. I dunno.
