I personally didnt think the stock stick was that bad. It worked great for neogeo games, i was able to pull off moves with no trouble in Samuri Shodown. It does take some getting used to in other games though. I really only did the d-pad mod because I love to tinker with stuff. I definitly wouldnt hesitate to get one just because of the stick.
A few more points: the stock stick DOES have a center push function, and is an 8 way stick. 99.9% of software works fine with only 4 directions though, and recognise UP+LEFT as a diagonal. One or two homebrew games require the specific diagonal, but nothing of importance IMO.
In my setup, i have since added a custom control board made by a GP32x.com member who was supposed to be selling them. What this board does is translate the UP+LEFT into a specific diagonal, and also if you press ALL 4 directions in at once it will translate it to the center push function. Unfortunatly this member seems to be MIA, but no software really requires the board anymore. A standard 4way pad + additional tact switch for the center push is all you need.
I am thinking of modding my GP2X. Help me out.
