the 'gba transverter' (what I used), wasn't a TV tuner, it was a video out that supplied composite, s-vid and (when hacked) analog rgb. I'd kill to get another one, but since that gamecube gba emulator attachment came out, they've been very hard to find. The catch on them was that they were large--roughly the same footprint as the original gba board itself, but with bulkier parts on it.Krepticor wrote:could you not do what they did with the GBA and use the Gamegear TV tuner for the Video out?
sadly all the 'easy' portables that output ntsc already have console brothers. So unless you are great with custom hardware, it's best to look for a commercial video solution.
what ever happened to that psp tv-out? not the one that clipped on to the front, but the one that dug in through the back with dangerous, labor-intensive modifications. that'd be the perfect thing to base a consolized portable off of. (except for the lack of interesting psp games) I guess that psp gba emulator is doing rather well, but that seems kind of like the long way around
and you could always make a consolized gp2x. it's got a TV out attachment, but it's really not too functional unless you solder it on. of course you're back to the quality games problem. Really I'm just begging for an excuse to rip my gp2x into bits. I really hate that system (here come the flames). but then I get to thinking that most of its problems could be fixed by adding a proper joystick port... well, not *most* of it's problems...

That's what I was thinking of. (And I totally agree with you second comment, no sarcasm intended!)Reaperman@home wrote:what ever happened to that psp tv-out? not the one that clipped on to the front, but the one that dug in through the back with dangerous, labor-intensive modifications. that'd be the perfect thing to base a consolized portable off of. I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

whatchu talkin bout willis? there is a ton of stuff you can do over the EXT port on the gp2x to make it consoleish, tv out with sound, usb host for controllers etc. as soon as i get it working ill post pics of my custom breakout boardand you could always make a consolized gp2x. it's got a TV out attachment, but it's really not too functional unless you solder it on.

did they actually get a 'jiggle free' gp2x tv-out going? It didn't look like they redesigned them, and I remember the beastly troubles with those. nothing a good soldering wouldn't fix.
a docking station for gp2x would be sweet. full sized hard drive, joystick ports, card readers. I had thought about it long ago. But for the life of me, I can't think of why I would bother, and why I bought the 2x to start with. it disappoints in *every way* I can think of, (mainly because my expectations were so high before it came out) and turning it into a console would put it in direct competition with my 'consolized' xbox. a battle which I don't have to even think about before I know who won. GP2x couldn't even keep my attention over the gbm...
PSP has more of a userbase, and I suspect homebrew will go farther on it. It'd also do well with a large hard drive in a case (though I doubt it will ever be 'dockable' like the 2x). commercial games may pick up on it--honestly I haven't paid any attention to it, for all I know their holiday linup may be awesome. It's main problem is that crazy aspect ratio. but knowing me, I'm the only one who sees that as a problem. I'd actually beg to get the chance to hook a controller of my choice to that. That system feels pretty rough. are we sure japanese designed that psp case--it feels german...
