also in reality, he said that his current comptuer is made of abandoned parts, and that he cant afford anything else. ESPECAILLY a mac.

Somebody earlier had the right idea by going to Start=>Run and then entering MSCONFIG. Search for the offending process and uncheck the box. Reboot and delete the file.

To fix the issue of it not letting you get to the Symantec site go to the following path and open the file called HOSTS in Notepad.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

In all likelihood you'll see a bunch of entries for antivirus vendors listed with an IP address of 127.0.0.1 listed. This is the loopback address for your PC. It's legitimate purpose is for troubleshooting, but it can be used maliciously to prevent you from accessing website as your PC will check this file for resolving DNS before using Internet DNS servers causing site names to resolve to the wrong address and not be displayed. If they are a bunch of entries in there for symantec.com, mcafee.com, etc. you will want to remove them. The only entry that should be in that file is 127.0.0.1 localhost. Check this out as I have seen this happen to people's machines at work from time to time.

Then I would clean out your Temporary Internet Files and run a couple of spyware removal tools to get your machine back to a usable state.

How did you get the virus in th first place

Why wasn't Norton installed, its usually easier to prevent the virus, not remove it.
