Hm, you wouldn't think that your fingers would be laying on the cart, would you?

Maybe you could make a shell for the genesis cart, and bondo it on (using the first method of cart slot location).

You know if you are unable to get the Genesis carts to fit properly with a GBO after you add all the guts of a Radica, there is a second option. You could see about vacumme forming a larger GBO case, one that will fit the cart and anything else you plan to add.

I'm touch-and-go on where I want the cart right now. Hell, I might even take the flip-top from the S&K cart and mold that to the top of the GBo and just have the cart stick on the top. Once my Intec Hip Gears arrive on Friday, I'll get moving on a more useful mockup.

If you ever need a spare connector, I have two dead Gennies and an S&K cart. Nice work so far, to give it the old skool Genesis look, I suggest a black case with blue buttons and a brown strip on the top or bottom. I had an idea like this (has everyone?

) but it would not have had a cartslot. If you do a slot, I suggest the L formation like G-force's. Feels better in hand in my opinion...

I always wanted a non-functional blue sports-edition Game Gear. I think it will make a nice portable, probably an NES. Its huge!

And that Altoids case in the pic above is holding critical Game Boy components, like the On-Off switch and the headphone jack.

Oh, and regarding the cart being wider than the Game Boy, I'm probably going to tackle that issue by putting the cart sideways on the back of the Game Boy. Check its fittment:

Can't wait to see the results. But a hint of advice, maybe you should put the cartconnector (inside of the old cart slot area). It's weird. Like, slice a hole in that big space, to fit in the cart slot, so the cart may be sticking out.

you should just have it sticking out the back like G-force did, it seems like it would take up the least room in the case also

My Game Gear is the Sega Sports edition. There are a few on eBay <a href=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 374>(1)</a> <a href=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 947>(2)</a> <a href=http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 183>(3)</a> right now. Actually, it turns out that my Game Gear does work, but the audio amp has failed. Nonetheless, it isn't going to be a Game Gear system for much longer.

Once I get my screens, I can really start to fit this project together. The cart connector will fit wherever it fits after all the other stuff is fitted in. Thanks for the input, guys!

I have an idea! this will allow you to keep the GBO case (most of it).

Use the front, as you where planning to do anyway and make a larger back for it. Obviosly it will stick out abit but if it is done properly it should look Stunning. I will see if i can make a mock up of it at some point.

Well, I've made progress today. I found my Radica. Another Radica was shipped to me today as well. And I picked up a Game Genie to rip a cart slot out of and turn into an EEPROM cart for loading...well, roms of games I have on my PC.

On an unrelated topic, I picked up a copy of Sonic 2 for Game Gear ($7 new in box never opened!) so I could test/fix my Game Gear if possible. It turns out that my Game Gear isn't broken on the sound board, but something is wrong with the screen. I'll figure that out later though.

EDIT: I'm extremely happy with the Game Genie purchase. It is the easiest cartridge I've ever taken apart, and the cart connector is great. I can't wait to build the Game Genie into an EEPROM cart to compliment my Radica.

I should have something functioning from the Radica this weekend.

Well, I suppose an update of sorts is in order. I haven't made any real progress on the case for my portable, as I am at a loss of buttons for completing the control interface. It seems that all of my NES controllers have disappeared or turned into Quick-Shots, so I'll have to go to a backup plan of some sort. I'll figure something out soon.

I recieved my SF2 Radica today, complete with four free rechargable AAs! Unfortunately, they are discharged, but I'll figure out if they work with my charger or explode in it soon enough.

I still need to get open my Sonic and Knuckles cart. I've elected to use its friendlier cart connector for my portable, since the Game Genie needs much more force to remove a cart from its connector, and Game Genies are cool anyway. The S&K cart will have a new life as a Master System convertor later. I just have to find a 50-pin cart connector...

Ah, well, there's work to be done. I'm off!

Another update with no pictures.

I'm using PS2 pad buttons now, along with some of the PS2 pad PCB. They're textured, which is nice. I just have to remove the XO[]/\ paint from them. I'm debating on whether I want to use a Genesis-style D-pad. I have plenty, between the Radica pad and various broken Genesis pads.

I've gotten the cart slot off the S&K cart and will most likely wire it up tomorrow. I still need to get a 3-way switch so I can bypass the onboard 6-in-1 ROM when a cart is inserted.

I've decided to add controller and power input as well as A/V output. The Intec screen came with a power adapter and a PS2 A/V pass thru, so I will be using those. I believe this will be the first Genesis portable to utilize a PS2 A/V hookup, and I think that's pretty cool. I'll find a DB9 connector for the controller input, since it will fit a Genesis pad no problem.

I might have something working this weekend.

I did manage to almost verify that everything would fit though. I need to re-start the GBO case if I want to put it together with screws instead of glue though. After putting a Genesis controller D-Pad in the GBO, and uying a huge box of GBOs, I realised that I totally FUBAR'd the stadoffs in the case, but that isn't really such a big deal at this point. If I had photos of the Genesis D-Pad in the GBO on this PC, I'd post them, but for that I would have to be home.
