Here's an idea:

That's a search for Tetris board game. I didn't add anything negative into the search terms, and that's the 1st result. Enjoy!
It's been done. And put first on that guys "X-Entertainment crap Board Games" list. Enjoy reading his review!

GRADE: Big motherfreaking "F." I'd liken the fun factor of playing the "Tetris" board game to having the hair on your testicles tweezed out by a clumsy old lady on a shaky caffeine high, but then, at least the latter would provide you with a neat story to tell the guys on poker night.
Hey, sup?
Could you not just build a wooden frame kind of like a connects board game and drop the pieces in then have a locking hinge on the bottom to get all the pieces out. Say you have eight columns you get an eight sided dice or any other random number chooser and then drop it. Same idea can be used for rotating them. Each square though has like a tapered edge so it slides easily whilst staying in place. You then have hole in the side where you can tip them out. I know it could work if there was just some way to screen print my mind then you could see my idea.

I too have an idea which I know would be possible but would require a little robotic intervention. I can clearly visualize the mechanism to arrange the magnetized cubes into a pattern and move them down the board automatically, and I can see how to remove lines at the bottum. I just can't explain it, so I guess I'm not of much use here.

This is reminding me of <a href="http://www.cyberniklas.de/pongmechanik/ ... mechanical PONG</a>.
I doubt it would be feasable to build a mechanical Tetris machine. You could always have an array of blocks that extend from the wall depending on where the game blocks are. So you'd have a grid of blocks on the back wall, each with a servo that pushes them out to make a Tetris grid. You could even put some lights in the blocks to make them different colors. It's not the same as having the blocks actually fall, but it's a lot less complicated.

It would be possible to make a completely mechanical machine, but it would be slow. A electronic/mechanic hybrid would also be slow. Maybe a easier way to start would be to buy a CRT (not an entire display, just a single tube about 6"). The either get a PIC or a BASIC Stamp, then program it to use the CRT and about 5 buttons (left, right, rotate cw, rotate ccw, and reset).

Don't give up yet! I was planning to do this, but I'll give you my plans:

Here's an animation:

Sorry for the fast animation. To spin the Tetris pieces... you, uh... use a stick... and push them..
You can connect a controller (most likely atari) down is to make the conveyer belt move faster and the button... make a new piece come out. Maybe. The pieces will be stored in the bubble/russian thing.

If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

It could work. You'd have to have 2 straight conductors that don't touch each other on every square. Like this (each '+' is inside a block:
So if you didn't have a complete row, it'd end up as an open circuit. And it'd work for rotation too. But have fun clearling it. THat's an ub3r challenge.++++++
++ ++++++
+++++++++++
Once again, the '+' is not a 4 way conductor. It's 2 seperate wires, one going like '---' and one going like '|'. It'd work, but it's not like analog tetris would work too well anyways. Let the little kiddies dream.++++++
