Initially I had considered using lead acids but even gell-cells seemed so high maintenance that I thought nimh's would be better. However I think I will take your suggestion an switch back, better to have 80$ worth of batteries fail if I mess up than a set of batteries that cost almost 4 times that! (that and American Science and Surplus has them for peanuts
