Dude, you can cut the psone screen soo much more, without any rewiring. I actually did it, too.

Why bother, the N64 mobo is bigger than his screen mobo so it wouldn't really reduce the overall size.ShockSlayer wrote:Dude, you can cut the psone screen soo much more, without any rewiring. I actually did it, too.

I've been chopping off portions that get in the way of the controller buttons and joystick. No real point in doing more than that.
I'll admit, it is pretty liberating being able to discern what can be done away with on a circuit board and what needs to be kept. "What's up with all this wasted space? I'm going to chop it off right now!" I've been researching robotics recently, and I keep cringing at all the wasted space by folks who don't want to solder their parts together or use breadboards in their "finished" products.

That's exactly what I thought when I read it. Sure, you can cut more off, but unless your case is very small or clear, there's no need.Life of Brian wrote:I've been chopping off portions that get in the way of the controller buttons and joystick. No real point in doing more than that.
I'm stoked for MGC! What, another two full weeks? Arg.

Re: *Gasp!* (see page 6 for LOB64 pinout!)
Did some more work today, mostly involving cutting the case a little bit and trimming the N64's board some more.
I read online about how someone fashioned a homemade hot air iron with a RadioShack desoldering iron, a fish tank air pump, some tubing, and some copper wire stuffed inside to help heat the air before it left the iron.
I decided to give it a try, since I will be needing something handy like that for the jumper pak relocation.
Ever seen a coax cable stripped?

Yay! Free copper wire!

For my initial attempt, I realized that this was way too dense for the air flow. I've since cut about half of that out:

My tubing was way too small to fit over the iron's metal tube where the rubber bulb originally went. I scouted around and couldn't believe it when I found the answer right in front of me: a pen cap! It's the perfect size to convert from the tubing to the iron, and it fits almost airtight!

I added a wee bit of hot glue to help keep air from leaking:

I could lie and say that I removed the jumper pak holder with my new hot air iron, but I did this the ol' fashioned way - with a pair of pliers and my regular soldering iron. I do, however, plan on using my cheap-o hot air iron when I try directly soldering the jumper pak. I'll let you all know how that goes.

(^I was so nervous I was going to rip a trace off, but all is well!)
After that, I went and did something stupid. I broke a capacitor when I tried to remove it from the board. I am assuming the value of this cap is 68uF, correct? I did a bit of research and I can easily find a replacement on Mouser.com, but I think I will wait a bit and think of other items I need from there rather than paying several dollars shipping for a 30 cent item! Any tips on exactly what I need to replace it? Or will just any 68uF cap with sufficient voltage rating suffice?

You can use a cap with higher voltage.
I broke one of those off yesterday, I just harvested one from a fried board to fix it.

Yes, that is 68uF and you can put anything equivalent in its place (provided you get correct polarity
)

Mmm, no I haven't given up on it but rather had a change of priorities. I still very much want to make two N64 portables simultaneously and link them together so my wife and I can have some wicked 007 GoldenEye matches, but time and money tend to get in the way. Plus I got distracted with this project... Like always, if I'm going to do it I want to do it right rather than just hammer something out, and that takes time. And effort. And money. Three things which have been in short supply recently.

Oh crap. I thought I was going to be the first to finish an AG-64p. CRAP CRAP CRAP.
I better get done QUICK.
