I think that is what people were saying about No More Heroes which sadly hasn't done so well. It even prompted a certain game developer to imply that there is no point to make games for Nintendo as "only first party games do well on the Wii."

Personally, I thought No More Heroes looked too cartoony. Remember how fans reacted to Wind Waker? Sure, people still bought it and played it, but you expect people to give Nintendo more leniency with something like that as they have built up credit.

Also, there will be other successful games by third parties (The Force Unleashed, Call of Duty, etc.), but I think The Conduit has a different symbolism to it since its not with some big development company such as EA, LA, or Ubi.

grossaffe wrote: There is no doubt that nintendo's conference sucked big time. no doubt. but, in the interviews with Miyamoto afterwards, some more information has been gleaned. It has been implied that there is another Kid Icarus in the making as well as another Mario game. but, as I said, they've been marketing their system to the casual gamers, but that doesn't mean they aren't still making core games. While it is not concrete and flat-out announced, I have no doubt they are working on these titles (well, I'm not so sure about Kid Icarus, but I am optimistic).
For the most part, I think he's right. What does Nintendo have to gain by showing footage of another Zelda? The people who want to see it will undoubtedly buy it when it comes out. Likewise, the people who think that Nintendo's franchises are tired out won't be impressed with a new game, regardless of what is shown. That portion of the market isn't going to have any significant changes. So why waste time pitching an expected game whose userbase is already determined before they even announce it? If the non-gaming Wii owners weren't interested in Zelda on the SNES or N64, they probably won't be interested in Zelda on the Wii, either (unless Nintendo attempts to redirect the franchise towards them, which I'm sure you wouldn't want).

It would be smarter to market to the userbase whose interests have not been completely determined, in order to produce more interest in their console and the software that it can offer. And that's exactly what they did. Their main announcements were attempts to get the people who bought a Wii solely for Wii Sports to start buying other things for it, because software sales on that side of the market is really suffering.

It's not that they are turning their backs on the smaller gaming community. It's just that you're predictable, so there is no reason to devote a conference to you anymore. The only reason Microsoft and Sony do so is because they have no other group to announce to (and even then, you can see that they are still trying to make that transition). You will get your Zelda. You will get your Mario. They are not going to suddenly drop those franchises, so what else can they really say? Any other big gaming announcements for the system should be coming from third-party companies, since you are already aware of the games that Nintendo will inevitably deliver in the future.

I'm just waiting for the wii fad to die off. It already had too many peripherals the day it was launched and I don't care about any of the games coming out for it. It's understandable though, if I was a game maker, I'd make all the good games for the more capable consoles too.

Well, at the moment, Nintendo is selling almost as many Wiis as Sony and Microsoft are selling their respective systems combined. [Source] It's certainly not showing any signs of dieing off quite yet, and I personally don't think it will ever happen before the next generation of consoles... but, you never know, I guess...

The problem with the mass market is that they're fickle. Oat bran one year, Atkins the next, black is the new black, etc.

They'll get sick of games and move on. Dot org.

Also, it continues to piss me off how people keep saying Nintendo brought gaming to the masses. The game industry has outdone movies for several years now! Maybe 20 years ago with the NES I'd buy that argument, but whoever thinks games weren't mainstream before 2006 is nuts.

It's like saying smoking isn't mainstream because ONLY 30% of the nation does it.

Bottom line: the Wii will hurt gaming in the long run, mark my words. Plus it's a POS on top of that ;)

Anybody else with me that they all pretty much sucked?
Especially those guys on G4 that practically wet themselves over Gears of War 2. Yuck.

Nintendo's got about the only games left anymore that I'll play. Smash, Metroid, etc. Everything else... I dunno, just seems boring...? I mean, people talked about the repetativeness of that "lock on" system in that one shooter game (what's that fallout or something?) anyway, and I look at gears and it's the same thing, like, oh there he goes again killing a guy while he's down on the ground, helpless.. and then the chainsaw... blah.
Bert (me) hasn't become a strict PC gamer, since I play the Nintendo DS and Wii too much, but I play PC a lot more than any other consoles out there.
Granted there are a select few titles on each of the other two consoles I'd love to play, there's a heck of a lot more on PC that I'd prefer, and a majority of which have already been released for years.

On a totally side note, you can't just keep comparing the successes of Nintendo to the Xbox and Playstation. People say all the time that they're in an entirely different league, and they really are. Maybe if we were back at the gamecube stage, sure you could do that. But there's been a whole change of philosophy, and a change of method, so you really can't compare Nintendo to Sony or to Microsoft. Sure one may steal the sales of another, and both do work in a video game industry, but they're so unrelated it's like comparing sharks to goldfish because they both swim. To make a minor analogy, two of the three big industry leaders are seeing who can have the biggest most fierce shark, but Nintendo's approach is to let them keep fighting about who is better than who and start thinking about something different that sets them apart, in a totally different, and new way.

The problem with the Wii, I think, is that despite cool potential for games, all we get is shovel ware and gimmicks.

I mostly blame this on 3rd party developers who, wanting to make impressive visuals, automatically jump to the 360 and PS3. So maybe MS and Sony trying to imitate Nintendo's motion tracking devices will turn out to be a good thing as developers can start to use motion tracking for real applications.

That Is what I have been scared of...It might go the way of the arcade...The industry will stand still soon.

*^ stares at your avatar ^* Would it be totally cliché if I said "Kawaii des ne!"? :P

Speaking of, what exactly was it again that lead to Sega's downfall? Wouldn't it be hilarious if they came out of nowhere like, "BAM! Dreamcast 720!" and destroyed Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo?

a combination of the flop that was the Saturn and the expensive machine that was the Dreamcast; people weren't yet ready to lay down that kind of money on a gaming machine.

Too expensive? Huh... that sounds familiar, doesn't it? *cough*Sony*cough* Image That has been a problem for Sony, despite their arrogance about their system's price. Although, it seems as though Sony is doing better at E3 than M$ or Nintendo, but I guess that's no saying much.
