Why did you have the SE/30 and how much RAM did you put in it?

I had the SE/30 hooked up because I was recording the music from Tetris Max and a couple of other old Mac games.

It has the stock 1.44 MB 3.5" Superdrive floppy drive, an 80MB hard drive (the original one , and it's fully loaded with 8 MB of RAM. (any more and I'd have to install MODE32 or 32-Bit Enabler.

At one point I had a SCSI Ethernet adaptor on it, but I couldn't get it working properly. So I just hooked up the LaserWriter II (with IIsc upgrade board, 16MB RAM) up through PhoneNet AppleTalk.

Lode Runner, Daleks, Lunar Lander... Good times. Good times.

Did you know that the SE/30 could have an internal ethernet card? The model name says it all: System Expansion. Also, if you want to install the full (:mrgreen: 128 MB) of RAM, MODE32 is your best bet, the 32-bit enabler has some issues (figures, it was made by Apple , 3rd party equivalents are usually better than Apple's), MODE32 was Connectix, the company that understands Apple's older computers better than they did. I always liked the SE/30 and IIx thing, where they both got the same upgrade, but the name change was different. They couldn't use II/30, because it looked like 11 MB of RAM and a 30 MB hard drive and if they added an x to the SE…

Yeah. I've actually seen another SE (not /30) at my dad's workplace that had an ethernet PDS card in it. (unfortunately all these machines were scrapped over 11 years ago. )

And of course you know how hard it would be to find the 128 MB worth of SE SIMMS? pretty impossible if you don't shop online!

Connectix had it all: MODE32, Virtual Game Station, RAM Doubler...

I've got that SE/30 loaded with all the classic software I have without downlaoding anything. Excel 4.0, Word 5.1a, PowerPoint 1.0, MacPaint, Mac Draw, MacDraw II, MacDraw Pro, Sim City... The list goes on and on...

We've had a listless number of Macs in our house over the years. (Most were discards from my dad's work.) One was a Power Macintosh 8500/180, with A/v input and output. Another was a Performa 6500 with built-in subwoofer. Man that thing sounded like excrement unless the volume was cranked! ) We evenhad a Macintosh Portable once, but the stupid thing didn't work very well, if at all )

Aww, now I feel old, talking about computers that are about 16 years old, if not older, by now.

You may be, but I know of most old technology, and I love it all! I have even ripped a few records back to the computer (mostly for my nieces and nephews), I grew up with my older sister's turntable (that she won when SHE was 15) and I barely owned any cassettes (and I have never owned a CD), but I listened to the same LPs as them (there are about 70 in the room next to mine). I'm not exactly sure where you might find 128 MB of SE/30 RAM, but back in the day, it would run you a couple grand. And yes, Connectix was the greatest and I have all of their products somewhere, except for MODE32 (which I'm never needed).

Oh, and my entire collection of Macs (only own one PC, not even worth mentioning):

•LC (family computer bought only 3 months after I was born 10/50 MB)
•LC II (bought to replace LC, never did, I took it from basement and set it up 3 years after Performa was bought, 12/500 MB)
•Performa 6400/180 (successor to our LC, bought at major discount after discontinued, had same subwoofer as 6500, monitor had normal speakers, 16/1.8 GB)
•iMac Graphite 600 MHz (current main computer, 256 MB/40 GB + 250 GB external Maxtor OneTouch)
•PowerBook Duo 2300c/100 (bought on eBay, needs new display cable, dock and minidock, if anyone has any of them, I love it 20/1 GB)
•Mac Classic II (came from same sister as mentioned above, 12/30 MB)
•Performa 200 (the Performa version of the Classic II, garage sale, $20 8/30 MB)
•Performa 6214 (lady from church gave it to me when she won a Windoze machine, dunno/dunno GB)
•PowerMac 8500/100 (got free from man at computer club, also had AV in/out, used it to play GameCube when the TV was occupied, also good for copying DVDs since the pass-thru eliminated Macrovision!, 16/2 GB + 3 GB)

I've also gotten much software without downloading, Microsoft Works and all of the original Claris programs (MacWrite, FileMaker Pro, Resolve, etc…) we bought for the LC, along with the Personal LaserWriter LS (which I later found out to be the crappiest LaserWriter), AfterDark 1.0-4.0 came from various computers, Soundmaster (if you know, you know, if you don't, don't ask), MS office 1.0 (no PPT ), Widget workshop (excellent game!), Lunatic Fringe (if you know what this is, you have achieved übergeekiness), DarkSide, At Ease, Spin Doctor, Descent, Norton Utilities 1.0-3.0, Flowfazer, ClarisWorks 4.0, Bailey's Bookhouse, Millie's Math house, The Backyard, The Treehouse, The Playroom, (I am reminded of IIe startup that worked with an upgrade card for the LC (but not LC II or III) to emulate an Apple IIe on your LC, using only the monitor and keyboard, the CPU was on the card. There was also a dongle that allowed you to plug in a disk drive or a joystick. Erm, just remembered something! Connectix RAM doubler 1.0, and 3.0, StuffIt 1.0, Adobe Photo Deluxe 1.0, more stuff I don't remember…

At any rate, I had them all networked via PhoneNET adapters at one point, but since moving them around, I haven't changed the position of some of the adapters yet, and they all must be in either 1 or 2 rooms, NO EXCEPTIONS (PhoneNET was a daisy-chain network, but the extra line wiring in a house can carry the signals if you only have 1 line). Over the years, I acquired some peripherals such as a QuickTake 150 digital camera (one of the first, about $2,000 new for .3 megapixels), a TwainScan II scanner (came with the 8500), the PhoneNET adapters (from eBay), and probably a few cables and stuff. There are also only 4 computers I own that have ethernet (though the Duo can have it if it is in a DDII+ and I get an AAUI-10Base-T adapter), and one of them doesn't have LocalTalk, plus, none that have both can run OS X, so I shall need a bridge.

At one point (when I had only 5 computers), they all had unique names too (for the network, the Classic II was named "My Baby" by the previous owner, my sister, the Performa, "Main Frame" (because it had the largest hard drive (besides the iMac, which wasn't networkable via LT PN), the LC II was "High drive" because it had the most space free, the iMac was "Graphite", and the LC was…I don't remember. When I boot it up, I will be sure to tell you. After I started to get more, I started calling them The Classic II, The Performa 6400 and all that other stuff.

The peak of the network was right before the Duo's display cable finally went kaput (it was bad before, but it still worked, just there was a 1" yellowish bar near the left side of the screen, and right after I installed Mac OS 8…). Then it fell apart, as I no longer took my laptop anywhere. I'll probably end up taking it to college (for kicks, typing and VNC, not as a main machine) after I fix it up with a microdrive reader (I'll be putting in a SCSI hard drive so the IDE bus is free for a second, removable hard drive, 2 new batteries (and a dual charger), a display cable, and a 48 MB RAM module (note that it is NOT a DIMM because older laptops didn't use DIMMs). Maybe I'll even fix it up with a neoprene bag for all the accessories! I also need some more accessories, anyone got a NewerTech Ethernet microdock? I can't seem to find one on eBay…

I have lately been using the other computers to do things like read MegaTokyo (though it has to be transferred manually, I have no network at the moment), and play Cogito (it doesn't like the classic environment or G3 processors well).

I have also longed for an SE/30, but I never got the chance when I was crazy about them (probably a good thing, I get yelled at enough for bringing in extra stuff) and a TAM. Anyone who knows what a TAM is, well you're one of the few. Just seeing it made me happy, it would fulfill some of my wildest dreams (especially with a certain combination of accessories that someone else realized were good too).

If someone knows where to get a cheap router (an ethernet one, not a wood router) that does NOT include a hub, I would be happy. I got a 6-port workgroup switch for Christmas when I asked for a router and didn't have the heart to tell my oldest sister that it was NOT what I needed.

Another thing: I have a Color StyleWriter 2500 and it has a bad cartridge (the thing that includes the print heads). If anyone has one they'd be willing to sell, that would be nice. I can get the ink cartridges myself (I'd refill them, but the old ones are all dry and crusty now, I need new ones to actually do that).

I've also been looking to come by a 233 MB SyQuest drive (or a SyJet if it is possible) for some of the older computers. Again, for those who know what it is, good for you, you shall not annoy me, for others, you'd be better off if you didn't bother with it.

One more thing: I am 15.
