would the iXtreme lt firmware allow me to run game from the hard drive, upgrade the harddrive and run without the disc drive?

No, it would only allow you to run games off of dvd-r dl disks. What you would need is a JTAG'd 360. I have a JTAG'd 360 running freeboot 0.32, but they cost considerably more.
