Tchay's original design for his 1st Portable Gamecube

Post by Tchay »

Seen below are pictures and videos of an older design of my 1st portable gamecube. New design features the same case and concept, but heavily modified with the internals completely redone. I'm hoping to have it done by June/July.

If you want to see some newer pictures, check out Modretro.com

THE Ccube 97% with pictures added!!!!!!!!!!!!

All that is left is to install the other half of the case along with buttons
(I will make the other images smaller - I just wanted this one to be big for a better view).

The overall thickness. I am hoping to have it at about twice the thickness of the DS in the picture when I mash everything down.
Image

Close up of thickness. You can see the copper heatsink I made just left of center and the red laser on the right.
Image

Front side view. You can see the memory card A slot and the power plug right above it. Note that I have the portable tilted slightly causing it to look insanely thick in this picture.
Image

Left side view. On the left is a 2-way switch in case you have a multi-disc game like Resident Evil 4. The screen has not been secured yet so it appears to pop out a lot. This thickness will be drastically reduced after I install the other half of the case.

Specs:
To be listed when the portable is completed

NOTE: This portable does not have sound or batteries - so it is technically only semi-portable. Those are the downsides. This is my first portable so please keep that in mind when critiquing it. I already have plans for another portable similar to this one and have many new items to continue my GCP worklog (that portable will be the greatest portable on earth, which is why it is taking so long :) ).

Sorry for the poor video quality. Unavoidable.

Note: this is NOT the same portable as the one on my worklog. This was a side project I did from leftover parts.

Nope, although I did use that case to get an idea for my 10% project. The case for that project is still in the works. I may order one, or make it myself.

I hope I'm wrong but I gotta say it.

There's no way you will be squishing all that into that case. :|

But I hope you find a way to.

GOOD NEWS! It all fits

Well, okay there is like half a centimeter that might require some shovage, but still, that's pretty darn close!

The controller is really pissing me off, however. So I'm ganna have to relocate those devilish L and R buttons. No time or money to do it Hailrazer's way, so I'm doing it freesyle

- 10 wires total (5 for L and 5 for R). Piece of cake...

NIIIICE! I was just going to ask what your shoulder button plans were....freestyle, eh? Best of luck - and those things are a pain in the rear. I have halfway started on mine, at least they are hacked out of the housing.....

Everything is stable in this housing? No concern for parts to short out on each other?

Nice job.

Quite stable! And it actually doesn't get too hot inside! I guess my copper heatsink was overkill, but whatever.

Check out my video in the first post (way up top)

Its just a strip of copper than covers the "Gecko" chip. I know I called it the Flipper in the video so ignore that. I placed thermal clay (leftover from other Gamecube heatsinks) in between the copper and the Flipper chip.

THEN, I had more clay between the top of the copper and the bottom of the normal aluminum heatsink. I then screwed in the four screw holes on that half of the mobo. This made the copper tightly in place so I could not even budge it. That is very important: you want the copper and the chip to be as close as possible for heat transfer.

You can also see that I cut off the prongs of that half of the heatsink to have room for the fan.The powerboard gets SOOO HOT! So maybe a revision C board is better afterall? (you cannot cut off as much of the rev C mobos but its worth not having that extra powerboard).
