Knowledge on Modding

Post by Schmeman »

I am pretty much clueless when it comes to modding consoles but I have always wanted to be able to... considering I'm a big old school video game fanatic. I'm currently working on a SNES portable project but I often come across questions that I can't even think of the answer to. However, I guess my big question is...

How did all of you experienced Modders start out and collect the knowledge you have today?

Basically in layman's term, I'm a noob looking for info on everything and anything and don't know where to get it ><.

Buy ben's book, read all the threads here, and just ask questions. Asking is the best way, since you get exactly what you need. Reading the good indepth guides are always good too. (Bacteria, Life of Brian, and lovablechevy have written really good ones)

buy his book. read what he did, but that did not help me too much. so do what I do just build and hope it does not fry what you working on. I have not ruined a single thing so far!
Also, just look at it, think about it, and try to think up things that way. That helps me the most

Math time!

25,838 topics total on Benheck as of 6:45 pm EDT.

Let's say you spend only 2 minutes per topic. I know some are shorter, and some are a lot longer, but lets just say 2 minutes.

That means 2 minutes x 25,838 topics = 51,676 minutes reading through everything.

There are 1440 minutes in 1 day.

Poor Schmeman would be spending nearly 36 days reading everything on the forums, reading without any breaks.

If it were to be more "realistic", spending 12 hours a day reading would mean he would be spending 72 days, nearly 2.5 months, to finally read everything Benheck has of offer.

^Sorry, I just reeeeeeeeealy wanted to do that :P

Trial and error, when i joined the forums there wasnt 1/100th the information available to us as there was now, we just figured the stuff out as we went along, voltages, current requirements, pinouts everything! hopefully in the coming months we will have the reference section (or new wiki) in good standing so you wont have to look thru ~26,000 topics to find good info!
