PSOne Smallest Mobo GUIDE!! Update!!

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

PSOne Smallest Mobo GUIDE!! Update!!

Post by zenloc »

Here's the guide to make the psone screen as small as possible. ONLY FOR LED SCREEN!!. Relocating possible if you want to keep the originel backlighting but is not added in this guide. Note that this guide is just a addon to Kyo's trimming guide.

So here's a pic of the sides that you can cut. look at the closeups to see where to cut precisly. See black lines ignore red lines!! excuse bad quality pics for these two as I don't have a original board anymore so can't take new pics.

Relocation of the bottom part. Parts need to be relocated to designated area. Some are also possible to move elsewhere but for now just follow the guide  5v and 7,5 volt need to be rewired from other 7805K regulator.

Close up of where to cut. Black line is a extra piece you can cut off. DO NOT CUT THROUGH THOSE'S TRACES ON THE SIDE!!!!! or you need to rewire them!!

That's about it. As said before allot of ths information has been posted before so just use what you want to use. When I get another screen I might put up pics of the whole process step by step.

For now enjoy :)

My image is the same, except I made it be like that while cutting down the board.

it's weird since one board is cut down but not that much and the other isn't cut at all. Both of them started to show that weird image after smoke came from that chip. So that has to be it.

I think the same kind of chip is on the top of the board as well so might see if that works. (cut the top off so it's no in use now is it... )

Just because the chips have the same housing doesn't mean they're the same chips. So this actually happened to two of your boards? Why? What did you do?

yeah that's true since i burnt of the top of the chip i don't know what it says... could you check

what happend with the uncut board is that I cut a trace by accident and it shorted that chip. It fried when turned it on I didn't know I cut the trace.. :?

the cut board on the other hand was geting ready to be heavily trimmed
so I started with the bottom and rewired a component wrong thus shorting the same chip.

maby the reason why you have the same image is because you cut trough the trace leading to that chip....

But i don't have anything to lose anyway since it's broke might as well try that other chip....... BOOM goes the board ahah

I noticed that removing the big cap at the very bottom of the board also causes this effect.

The chip says SOMETHING, but I can't tell what, not even with a magnifying glass. sorry. I can tell, however, that it says something different than the chips on the top.

hmmm swapping the chip won't work then.. thanks anyway :)

My board revision doesn't have many caps at the bottom.. It has only one but that's on the c-synce out line which i took of al long time ago and it never gave me an problems

did you follow the cap's trace to see where it goes?

not a big cap, a small one on the back of the board. CP5 (on the pal board), to be precise. It's still on there, but I think there may be some sort of problem somewhere in that circuit. I'll figure it out.

jep that's the circuit where the chip is at.

I rewired that cap to ground by accident and smoke came from the chip just above it. I have pal screen too.

I just need to find out what kind of chip it is and if i can get a replacment.

If you findout anything let me know :)

I'm very interested in the solution myself, as we suffer from the same problem (due to different reasons) - It'd be nice if you could somehow obsolete the circuit altogether? Have you tried using RGB? I know I haven't.

yeah rgb has the same problem. It seems as a nessacery part of the lcd circuit.

I think i know what could fix your problem.

Image

the chip above the cp5 cap solder lower left lg to rs18

and/or the other connection. one or both of those connections should make the screen work again.

If not you should check all the connections at the sides of the board. As you already have seen i put up a red line where you can cut the board.

YESSSSS!!!!!!!!! RESURRECTION!! the problem is resolved!! the chip that was fried is also on the top of the boad. I needed to take it off an old board that was fried but everything WORKS!! wooeehoeee sorry i'm just very happy since i've been tinkering with this board for awhile now with no luck. :D

And some extra information. I Was slimming the mobo down and cut the whole top part off as shown in kyo's thread but i also power it with onely 1 KA7805R. The board doesn't tke 1A in 5V anyway so i would think 2 are obsolet

It all works and it doesn't heat up that much so all is good :D

thanks for the tip, I'll try it. Right now I'm having a different (weird problem). You know that small trapezoid sticking out on the right after cutting it? The screen will display fuzzyness normally (the volume and brightness controls are wider than they should be and thus cut off on the right of the screen) - it will work perfectly normal, but only if I press down on that previously mentioned part. Probably some kind of connection problem, I'll hopefully figure it out.

hmm sounds like a short. Check the traces and see if you have cut through them(most likely you already did). But if you did cut trough make sure the left over traces arn't shorting eachother.

I havn't had thi issue before and i cut up a bit more of the sides and just rewired the cut traces.

maby a pic of the cut side?
