CD Diode conversion to BEAM OF DEATH
I saw a video in which a 360 HDDVD laser diode was used to make a high-powered laser pointer. I, unfortunately, don't have lasers from crappy formats laying around, but I do have 2 ps1's. To a more experienced modder, how effective would the laser be as a balloon popper?

somehow, I already knew the answer. BUT! now I need to do something interesting with it..... how about... god, I have no idea. I'll add a turntable to it. But then it will only play singles.....Ahh, screw it, I'll make it into an RC robot that launches discs upward, to take out birds and RC Helicopters! using air pressure! Ohh, I could connect it to a compressed air tank on wheels! Then It won't be short of air! Brilliant. I could use a weed-whacker motor. An old game console army! The SNES could be deadly if I were to make the eject mechanism more powerful.... and on an incline. This is gonna be fun!

While you're at it, throw a Gameboy on there that launched frag-cartridges! BETTER YET, strap a virtual boy on it and slowly melt your enemy's eyesockets!!!Untzboy wrote:somehow, I already knew the answer. You cannot do anything with a CD drive laser, period. They are invisible, and so low powered that they are useless.
A CD burner is high powered enough to pop balloons, but it would be stupid to make one, as you could never tell if it is on or not, and you would need to focus it (IR goggle have too much diffusion of the light in the view to properly focus it).
You need a DVD burner diode, or a diode from one of the later model formats, like blu-ray or HD-DVD.

i hate how electronic part suppliers give you an option on their website to filter your searches so that you can find a certain part and no results come up!
