Doesn't work that way in a trade, you just have to trust them. And when you're buying something, you'll probably pay first, so you can get screwed there too.
Pretty much the best thing to do is just use common sense. If someone just has a few posts and they're all about buying/selling stuff, you might want to be cautious. It doesn't mean they're out to screw you, but because of the few crap sacks that cheat you, you have to treat everyone with caution.
I sold a PSone to RAZMATIC a year and a half ago, and I was stupid. I was sending out something else for a trade, so I decided to send out the PSone before he sent payment. Well, no payment ever arrived. He PM'd me a few months later saying that he'd had family problems and no internet access for a while and that he'd send out the payment plus. Over a year later and still nothing, and no contact since. I'd really like it if he would pay me, but I'm not gonna waste my life hating him. But then, I was only out 15 bucks, not 100.

I too got ripped off. A couple months after I joined I saw that gamer2 had super mario all stars for sale. I sent him the money he said he sent the game. I never got anything in the mail, So I asked him about the game, then he said he shipped it but he had another copy that was drawn on with marker that he would send. I never got either game and he seems to have disappeared from the forums. I got over after a while.

Its a shame that there are people that cant be trusted. :(

Not just $100, I wanted to get Zelda OOT to play this summer (Never beat it) as well as that genesis controller (Which I needed for a mod).

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am going to try and file a police report tomorrow. I have tried to use his address to find a phone number, but all the listings for that address have no phone number. Here is the info I have (Note that the name is likely the name of his older brother, as well as the myspace. However, he was the one who was paying, and he told me so, so both of them are the same to me).

DO NOT GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION OF OTHER PEOPLE ON THE FORUMS.
Besides, doing so could compromise your position as neutral if things are taken into the hands of the law!

NOBODY DEAL WITH CHRISTIAN RIVERA, THE SCAMMER!
(Added for dramatic effect if people find this in a google search for his name).

Cops are unlikely to do anything.

Basic rule as always, is to only send out goods AFTER you have received payment and payment clears. If the money then bounces, you have proof of "intention to permanently deprive" and also fraud.

I have bought and sold approaching a thousand items on e-bay in total, following this basic rule when buying and selling has worked every time.

Only time I might deviate from this rule is members on this forum, and only if I was prepared to lose payment if it defaults.

That's why I advocate the 'Contractor Payment Plan':

1. Buyer sends half the money
2. Seller ships the goods
3. Buyer sends the other half of the money when they receive the package

On Engadget, he said the guy logged in to the real owner's PSN network account.

IP addresses are unique to you only. It's not on the device.

That's not true.

There have been a ton of people that have contacted the police in a scammers town and they have gone to the scammers house and scared them into doing the right thing.

Check on Digitpress, Neo-geo, AtariAge, AnAndTeck Forums and you will find them.

I was just going to say the same thing. Maybe cops on the other side of the pond aren't so efficient, but in America, we at least try to make them do their job.
