If you want a car with super efficacy go with an old Prius (sp). They're a tiny little car with a simple 3-cylinder engine, and are suppose to get around 40 mph. They're going for something like $7000-9000 on ebay, but if someone you know who owns one doesn't know you can get it for under $2000.

Also when you do pick a car the smaller the better. For example the first car I drove was a '95 2-door coupe Dodge Neon (yeah go and laugh). That thing got great mileage, something in the area of mid 20s for city and low 30s for highway. In fact I almost got 300 miles on one tank, and the thing has only a 10 gallon tank. Something else too keep in mind.

Imports are your best bet by far. Any old domestic qualifying as a classic muscle car is going to need an engine rebuild the second you get it.

simply not true, basically ANYTHING powered by a chevy smallblock will run pretty much forever with only the most basic of maintenance, at most you might need to rebuild the carburetor, replace belts and hoses and that sort of thing, the 350 in my oldsmobile is from 1970 or 71 and has had, as far as i know, absolutely no major overhaul at all beyond replacing the carb filters belts and fluids. anything of a significantly older vintage (pre late 60s) WILL likely need more attention, or any vehicle that has been sitting for an extended period of time (greater than a few years) for that matter whether 5 years old or 50 sitting and not getting driven is bad on cars

So is the Chevy Metro, but they're considerably cheaper and don't come with a couple hundred pounts of replace-o-matic bartteries. Plus, if Wikipedia is correct the second-gen Prius (2000-2003) has a 13:1 compression ratio engine, which might ping a lot on cheap gas, so you'd have to weigh the MPG gain against the extra cost of gas.

The only way to have mass amounts of tire smoking, wheelie popping power with 30+ mpg is to buy a sandrail and do a street legal conversion on it. You can get one for pretty cheap with everybody selling their toys for cheap and a custom canvas enclosure+lights shouldn't run more than a grand. A sandrail with a 1800cc VW air cooled coupled to a 4spd stick (microbus trans) will make 60mph in first gear VERY quickly(around 100ft).
