Forums back.... BUT

The phpBB 3 upgrade attempt fubared the DB we had going, so I reverted back to the backup we did when we switched servers.

THUS all posts since April 2nd are dead. Sorry about that... but hey, we're working out the kinks, cut us some slack (the damage could have been a lot worse)

You know what? I'm not going to make a huge deal out of the fact that I lost 50 posts because of this, because on one hand, you're right. These are free forums, and we don't do much to help "pay" for them. But on the other hand, I'm sure Ben is prepared for minor flaming because of this; it comes with the territory. He should have backed up the database as soon as he began trying to install phpBB3, and I'm sure he knows that. You don't have to be okay with EVERYTHING just because you don't pay for the server. If Ben is going to throw the "you're not paying for the server" card in our faces, then he shouldn't have free forums at all. Period.

I'm not trying to come down on Ben, though I miss those posts and I do feel he should have backed up the database more recently. I'm just saying that this shouldn't have happened, and as a member of almost 3 years, I feel I have the right to complain about it a little bit.

Ben is a celebrity in the video game hacking community. He's made several appearances on multiple TV stations, has countless articles on technology blog sites such as Engadget, and has sold several portables for good sums of money. Do you think any of this would have been possible without us? His following? The point: While we may not be paying for the server out of our own pockets (which we may end up doing with the onset of Ben's new Cafe Press store, actually), we're helping him pay for it by making him famous.

Actually I bet if the forums went down and never returned Ben would still sell portables. The only people that visit the forums are people that like playing video games and hacking consoles (and a few other people thrown in there

)

Sure it sucks but don't get your panties in a knot over it.

I lost maybe about 30 posts, but nothing too important (IIRC). I'm just glad everything's back to normal, and the forums are working.
