Visa/Mastercard Giftcards

Post by HotDog-Cart »

Hey guys. Im sure we have all seen these types of gift cards and general purpose money cards and such.

Incase not: Im talking about the ones where you pay like $100, and you get a card with $100 on it, that can be used like a creditcard but you can only spend whats on the card.

Heres my question: Say I buy a $100 Visa or Mastercard Charge/Gift card. After I spent that $100 thats on the card, can I put like another $30 on it and spend that too? (I hate carrying cash, and Im not old enough to get a real creditcard.)

Remember, there's an activation fee (probably $5), and if you don't use it up within a year they start charging a monthly service fee from the balance.

As far as I know, they're not reloadable. There is that 'Green Dot' card service that basically gives you a debit card account not tied to a bank, but they also have activation and monthly fees, and you have to give them personal information to get one. (Social security number, for example. I don't know if you can even get one in Canada.)

You're better off buying things with cash, or ordering things online with bank checks.

What's wrong with carrying cash? It's good everywhere, has no activation or service fees, and you don't get hit with interest charges. As long as you know how to do basic math, it's the best way to buy stuff. Credit cards are really unsafe, and you have to know what you're doing with it and pay off the balance in full every month, or else you're throwing money away in interest and that $30 game purchase easily becomes $50 or $60 if you let it ride on the card too long.

Well. I ALWAYS buy stuff from the internet. Money orders take way to long. Paypal is stupid. (My account has NO limit, yet I get an error saying I need to do extended use, and they REFUSE to fix it. My stepdads gonna have a nice chat with them today.) Bank checks? Im pretty sure that takes a while to process. Heck, my bank will give me a certified check, but thats no good for buying from websites.

I charge card is my only option. I always thought you could reload these ones. Hmm, I may phone money mart today.

Blasphemy!

Talk to your parents there is a Visa card that they can get you that works in the way you want. They dictate the amount of money that goes on it. Try google searching it, "visa" "parent".
