External HDD

I have a blank (no formatting) hdd in a firewire / usb case, how do i format it for the first time?

(Assuming you use Windows): Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Removable Storage (or Disk Management).

If you can't do it as Removable Storage (the computer might not see it), remove the HDD from its housing, put it in your PC, do the above (Disk Management), format it, remove and put in your housing.
