I agree, he should consider himself lucky he has a laptop already. Besides, if a perfectly working laptop suddenly dies, and there's obviously damage done to it, there's no way in hell I'd give the kid a brand new laptop.
Breaking it to get a newer one is immature, foolish, and just screams "spoiled". The iBook G3 can easily run Mac OS 9, which is more than enough for class work, web browsing, email, and other general tasks, and that's all you really need a laptop for. (Aside form these "desktop replacement" monstrosities that weigh 20 pounds.) If you want games, use the desktop machine.
My advice? Throw in some extra RAM, get a WiFi card, and it will last a while.

Instead of breaking the current one and begging, why doesn't your friend just sell the G3 and make that the roots of a personal fund to get a new laptop? I'm all for cool new toys, but you should pay your own way for them if you really want them. I've got a spare Vaio Z505 he could buy from me!
But if he does get a new one, I say pass up any macbook or laptop and go for an OQO or an Ultra-Mobile PC. I'm typing this from an OQO 01+ that I got this week, and it's just sheer beauty. Enough kick for what you do every day with unmatched mobility. Give it a shot!

Well said. A friend of mine is trying to pull this exact same crap with his digital camera. A small part of me is hoping he gets shot down.Limewater wrote:Or maybe your friend should just learn to appreciate what he has instead of being spoiled and wasteful and ruining a perfectly working machine that could be put to good use
Yep, even if he does get a new laptop, at least don't kill the current one, sell it to someone that needs and would appreciate it. I have to buy pretty much anything I want that has to do with technology. I bought my PSP, laptop, and Pocket PC ($5 at thrift store FTW). So at the very least, don't kill the poor laptop, theres plenty of people out there that would be happy to have it.CronoTriggerfan wrote:Instead of breaking the current one and begging, why doesn't your friend just sell the G3 and make that the roots of a personal fund to get a new laptop? @CTFan, how much for the Vaio, and what are the specs and OS?

Well said limewater.Limewater wrote:You know, if you help your friend destroy his computer then he won't be able to run folding@home on it...
His iBook could be the one that really makes a difference.
And I hope this guy's dad is reading this. Cause if I read this and I was his dad. I would take his laptop and keep it for my self. And make him get buy a new laptop himself. And cut his allowance so he would have to work to get the money to get a new laptop
And personaly I would love to have that laptop. I always wanted to own a mac and see what it's like.

I agree, you shouldn't destroy the thing... someone else could find it useful... but who are we to tell you what the hell to do!? Go ahead and kill it, man. At least it'll make your friend happy.
Take out the hard drive and let it fall down stairs. There won't really be any evident damage on the outside but the platters on the inside will touch the head and essentially destroy the data. Seeing how there's a click of death your already so much closer anyway.
But don't blame us if the parents find out what happened and refuse to buy a new one.

Does it really need to be a new laptop? Why not just sell it and start buying discount desktop parts?

I agree with limewater. Your friend is completely ungrateful. I would wrestle a black bear just to have a 700mhz win98 laptop! Unless he's expecting it to play the latest PC/MAC games, he has no reason to destroy a perfectly good machine. He should just put a newer laptop or parts to upgrade his current laptop on his Bday or Christmas list for crying out loud. Or just sell the darn thing! Or maybe even ship it off to Goodwill and say someone stole it.
What's in your soda?
Its not being destroyed with this method, its being temporally er, broken, the stick of ram aout again, and it works!
Yes, it doesn't boot very well with a fried stick of ram.
All's well!
EDIT; We don't have goodwill in aus.
